DALLAS - A 12-day hiatus between matches may have slowed No. 2 seed Tulane early on, but the Green Wave shook off the rust and completed a 4-1 victory over No. 7 seed East Carolina in the quarterfinals of the 2018 American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship on Friday afternoon at Turpin Stadium on the campus of SMU.
The victory was Tulane's (16-6) fifth in a row and 10th in its last 11 matches while advancing to the semifinals of the tournament for the fourth year in a row. The Wave will take on No. 3 seed UCF on Saturday at 1p.m. for the right to play in Sunday's title match.
The Green Wave got ahead early on all three doubles courts, but ECU (22-5) would not go down without a fight. Tyler Schick and Hamish Stewart pulled away late for a 6-3 win from the No. 2 position, before the Pirates evened up the race for the first team point with a 7-5 triumph at the No. 3 spot. A
ll attention turned to center court where the No. 1 tandems remained in a tight battle. Tied 6-6, the 52nd-ranked duo of Constantin Schmitz and Ewan Moore were dominant in the tiebreaker, winning it 7-1 to clinch. The Wave improved to 14-0 this spring when winning the doubles point.
Tulane was not clear of danger however, as singles play proved to be as tightly-contested as doubles. The Green Wave and Pirates each claimed three first sets, and despite the split favoring the higher seed, the match never gave the student-athletes any sense of security. Court six was the first to finish, as Tim Ruetzel cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory, before Stewart completed a 6-3, 6-2 win on court three to extend the Wave's advantage to 3-0 in the overall match.
East Carolina got on the scoreboard with a straight-set triumph of its own on court four, but despite holding one-set leads on courts one and two, respectively, it would be Schick on court five to close out his match, 7-5, 6-2, to clinch the match and propel Tulane into the semis.
The wins by Schick and Ruetzel marked their fourth consecutive, respectively, while Stewart's victory was his third in as many matches. Schick is also 9-1 from the No. 5 position in dual matches this spring.
