NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane football team opened its fall camp on Wednesday morning in Yulman Stadium, practicing for two hours under cloudy skies to officially begin the 2018 season.
Coach Willie Fritz and members of the team spoke to the media afterward, with Fritz praising the team's increased depth since his first Tulane fall camp in 2016.
"This is by far the most guys that Tulane has had coming to the beginning of camp in a long, long time," Fritz said. "My first year I think we had 87 guys, and last year we had maybe 97 or 98. We're almost at 110 now. You can do a lot more things when you've got more people and depth."
Besides the depth of the team, Fritz also said that he thinks this Green Wave team is his best in his three years.
"I know we're stronger," Fritz said. "I think we're a faster team. We ran 40s a couple weeks ago and had some really good times. We've really developed these guys physically."
Among the new players on the roster this year are several graduate transfers who may see immediate playing time. Offensive lineman Noah Fisher and wide receiver Freddy Canteen were noted by Fritz in his post-practice comments, and they spoke to the media afterward as well.
Fisher, who comes to Tulane from South Alabama, knows the Green Wave program is up and coming.
"[Tulane] is on the rise," Fisher said. "There's just something special here. It's kind of hard to say, but there's something special here and guys are starting to see it."
Returning players were excited to get things started in fall camp as well. Redshirt senior quarterback Jonathan Banks discussed his chemistry with his wide receivers, running backs and offensive line, both groups that return a significant number of players from last season and have added even more for depth.
"It just feels great to be back out here with my team, running schemes and running plays, being able to showcase leadership," Banks said. "We've got a lot of new guys and a lot of new weapons, so it's going to be an exciting season."
On the defensive side, senior safety Roderic Teamer Jr. spoke highly of the incoming talent and said players were challenging for snaps and starts at every defensive position.
"There's a lot of other young guys who are competing for positions," Teamer said. "No spot in the secondary is safe. My spot is not safe, [senior CB Donnie Lewis] spot is not safe. Nobody has a safe spot in the secondary. It's Day 1, but you see the talent out of those young guys and it makes me look over my shoulder."
Tulane returns to practice at Yulman Stadium Thursday morning for its second day of fall camp.
The Green Wave open the 2018 season on Thursday, August 30 at home against Wake Forest.
