Jan 20, 2019 | Women's Bowling
LIMERICK, Pa. – The No. 6 Tulane bowling team capped a solid weekend by earning a 10th place finish at the 2019 KU Invitational hosted by Kutztown, paced by senior bowler Tiera Gulum who was named to the event's all-tournament team.
The Green Wave finished the 28-team competition with a 9-2 record, which included going unbeaten in Saturday action with a 5-0 record. Tulane knocked down 12,480 total pins over the course of the three-day event and finished with a pin average of 192.0.
"We had some periods of great execution as a team and it was nice to have a 5-0 day," head coach Hayley Veitch said. "We are still not where we need to be in terms of consistency, but luckily we have two weeks to be able to focus on a few key items that are currently hindering our performance."
Gulum earned her second all-tournament nod of the year by finishing in 13th place on Saturday, rolling four games of 200 or better, knocking down a total of 1,043 pins for an average of 208.60. Isabelle Lee rolled a season high 247 on Saturday and placed 36th, while Crystal Singh earned a new season-best mark with a game of 237.
Sunday's bracket final began with a match against conference rival Sam Houston State, as the Bearkats earned a 4-1 (210-177, 135-180, 215-214, 198-193, 234-181) victory over the Green Wave to open the day. Tulane bounced back in the next match, taking the first three games against UAB before eventually earning a 4-2 (180-155, 195-165, 193-151, 158-195, 165-216, 174-147) win over the Blazers.
Unfortunately, the squad would drop the final match of the weekend in four games to Delaware State 210-181, 208-177, 225-215, 182-152.
Tulane opened the weekend going 3-2 on Friday, earning wins over Morgan State, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Mount St. Mary's, with the team's only losses to DSU and Saint Francis.
The team turned around and was flawless on Saturday, steamrolling to wins over Monmouth and Maryland Eastern Shore, knocking down over 1,000 pins in each game. Tulane pulled out a five-pin win over Chestnut Hill College, while closing out with wins over LIU Brooklyn and the hosting KU Golden Bears.
Tulane will be back in action in two weeks, participating in the Prairie View Invitational February 1-3 in Arlington, Texas.
