
Tulane Beach Volleyball Sweeps UNO in Preseason Opener

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane beach volleyball team opened preseason action on Saturday, going 3-0 against New Orleans to kick off fall action at White Sands Volleyball Courts.
"We were all excited to start the fall competition phase," head coach Eyal Zimet said. "I am proud of our team for the work put forth up until now, the growth mindset and eagerness to learn and improve each day. We were blessed to have a gorgeous day at White Sands and enjoyed a great family-like crowd. We challenged our players to play with new partners and were able to gather priceless information that will help us moving forward. Lots to still work on, but many points of pride and plenty to look forward to."
Three of the team's pairs went undefeated on the sand, with junior Gabriella Becerra and freshman Ashton Mares teaming up on court two to win with 21-17 and 21-18 scores in the first 21-10 and 21-14 scores in the second and 21-9 and 21-8 scores in the third match of the day.
Sophomore Ellie Leitko and junior Ashley Delgado proved to be a solid duo, winning the first match with 21-9 and 20-22 scores, the second with 21-17 and 21-12 scores and the third with 20-11 and 21-17 scores on court number five.
Senior Tarin Mergener and sophomore Haley Gibson also went 3-0 from the No. 6 position, taking the victory with 21-12 and 21-10 scores in the first match, 21-12 and 21-13 scores in the second and 21-16 and 21-14 scores in the third.
Going 2-1 on the day on court one, senior Eva Torruella and sophomore Kilani Daane won the first with 22-20 and 21-19 scores before falling in the second, 21-17 and 14-21. The two came back to win the third match against the Privateers, 21-15 and 21-12.
Freshman Samantha Mehlman and junior Addie Hermstad also went 2-1 on the day from the No. 3 spot, falling in the first at 21-18 and 14-21 before coming back to take the final two with 19-21 and 21-16 scores in the second and 21-13 and 21-15 scores in the third.
Junior Rio Frohoff and freshman Kendall Peters also shined in their first time together on the court, winning the first match on court four with 22-20 and 21-18 scores before dropping the second, 11-21 and 21-14, and coming back to win the third with 21-18 and 21-12 scores.
The Green Wave are back in action next weekend as the team heads to Gulf Shores, Alabama to compete against Florida State, LSU, Spring Hill and North Alabama in its the Gulf Shores Collegiate Clash on Saturday.
