Nov 15, 2019 | Cross Country
FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – The Tulane cross country team closed its 2019 season on Friday, as three Green Wave runners earned personal records at the NCAA South Central Regional Championship.
The women's team averaged a time of 23:31 in the 6K at the Agri Cross Country Course, defeating Lamar, Arkansas-Little Rock, McNeese and Nicholls to finish in 18th overall. The six members of the men's team averaged a time of 33:32.06 in the 10K, finishing ahead of Texas Southern, Arkansas-Little Rock and Nicholls to stand at 19th as a team.
"I was happy to see the women's team rebound from the conference championship and perform better today," head coach Eric Peterson said. "We didn't seem to get that kind of effort from the men's team — and as we move forward as a program — we're going to work very hard to improve and get better. I'm happy with the way most of the seniors competed. They ran significantly better than they have all season and they were engaged in the race, competed throughout and came up with positive results. Everybody's looking forward to the track season, but I'm glad that we ran better today than we did at the conference championship."
Redshirt senior McKenzie Melius led the way for the Green Wave women, crossing the finish line at 22:43.7 to finish in 57th out of 150 total runners. Senior Mary Catherine Stovall was next up for Tulane, recording a time of 23:00.7 to take 70th overall.
Redshirt sophomore Bridgid Selfors was third among the Olive and Blue women, finishing in 78th with a time of 23:09.1. Selfors was followed by senior Paige Fatland in 114th with a time of 24:07.6 and redshirt sophomore Pauline Helm in 124th with a time of 24:37.0.
Topping the charts for the Green Wave men was senior Carlos Zervigon, who earned a personal best time of 31:57.7 to take 59th out of 156 total competitors. Sophomore Evans Kipchumba was just behind Zervigon, also notching a personal record with a time of 32:25.1 to stand in 73rd.
Next up for the men was graduate student Tom Coe, who finished with a career-best time of 33:01.3 in 106th. Freshman Samuel Kellum and sophomore Ian Valdez crossed the finish line within seconds of each other, as Kellum finished in 142nd at 35:02.9 and Valdez finished in 144th at 35:13.3. Rounding out the roster for the Olive and Blue was sophomore Jamie Polakoff, recording a time of 36:45.4 to finish in 152nd overall.
Arkansas, the No. 1 team in the nation, finished first in the women's race and produced the top five individual finishers. Texas finished second in the 6K, followed by Texas A&M, Texas-Rio Grande Valley and Rice.
Texas was crowned the regional champion for the men, followed by Arkansas, Texas A&M, Lamar and Rice in the 10K.
