Men’s Basketball Adds Sion James to Signing Class
Nov 18, 2019 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane men's basketball head coach Ron Hunter announced the signing of Sion James to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) and the second member of this year's recruiting class.
Â
James joins Jadan Coleman from Madison, Ala., who inked his NLI one week prior. Both will join the Green Wave as freshmen for the 2020 fall semester.
Â
"Sion is a high-academic kid who plays the game the right way," Hunter said. "He has great size and athleticism at the guard position, and we look forward to adding both his basketball and leadership abilities to our team."
Â
A 6'5 guard from Lanier High School in Sugar Hill, Ga., James earned Region 8 Class 6A Player of the Year honors and received 2019 North Atlanta boys' all-state first team honors and all-county recognition after averaging 14.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game as a junior under head coach Branden Mayweather. He led the Longhorns to the Class 6A title and was a 2019 Gwinnett County All-Metro Second Team pick while being selected to the 2019 North Georgia All-Star Basketball Classic.
Â
As a sophomore in 2018, James paced Lanier to its first 20-win season and first state playoff win in program history while averaging 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. In the classroom, he owns a perfect 4.0 grade point average and ranks in the top five percent of his class.
Â
On the AAU circuit, James played Game Elite under head coach Tremayne Anchrum in 2018-19 after competing for the Georgia Red Storm and coach Patrick Scales from 2011-16.
Â
Tulane heads to South Carolina for the first of three games at the Myrtle Beach Invitational beginning Thursday, November 21 against Mississippi State. Tipoff is scheduled at 1 p.m. (CT) at HTC Arena and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
