No. 19 Men's Tennis Falls to No. 10 Stanford at ITA Indoors
Feb 16, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Seeded 16th, the Green Wave (4-5) will face the loser of host Illinois and Florida in Sunday's consolation third place match at 6:30 p.m.
For the second day in a row, the battle for the doubles point was intense with each game hanging in the balance. Stanford (6-2) pulled ahead at No. 1 midway through before closing out a 6-3 win. While court three was a back-and-forth battle and the Cardinal leading, 5-4, court two was locked in a 5-5 tie, but Stanford pulled away late, 7-5, to claim the first team point of the match.
The Cardinal used that momentum heading into singles, claiming the first set on five of six courts. Felix Ewers took the first frame of No. 6 singles, but his match went unfinished after dropping the second, 6-1. The Wave came up short in straight sets at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, as Stanford clinched the match with the trio of victories.
Ewan Moore and Hamish Stewart rebounded from lost first sets to win the second at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, but were unable to finish before the Cardinal clinched.
