NEW ORLEANS – The No. 18 Tulane beach volleyball team is ready to kick off its season this weekend, opening 2019 with the Home2 Suites Hilton-Tallahassee State Capitol Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at Florida State.
"We're all very excited to begin another season and can't wait to get out there and compete this weekend," head coach Wayne Holly said. "Our team has grown tremendously since fall training, and this weekend will be a great opportunity for us to show how well we're able to compete."
The Green Wave are set to match up against four opponents in the weekend tournament, facing host No. 3 FSU on Saturday at 7:15 a.m. before competing against Tampa at 10:45 a.m. The team will close out the weekend on Sunday with competitions against No. 6 Cal Poly at 7:15 a.m. and No. 7 LSU at 9 a.m.
Coming off the heels of a successful 2018 campaign, in which the team defeated five ranked teams to earn 23 total wins, Tulane looks to continue its growth and success on the sand in the program's eighth season.
Returning junior Kaylie McHugh, selected to the 2019 CCSA Preseason All-Conference Team after ending her sophomore year with a 30-7 record and All-American honors, is expected to lead the Green Wave on the courts this season. Junior Tarin Mergener, earning a spot on the 2019 Preseason Watch List after ending the season with a six-game winning streak and 22-15 record, is also looking to help Tulane to climb up the rankings as the season progresses.
The Olive and Blue opened the 2018 season with a 2-1 record at the Fight in the Fort, battling it out to earn a 3-2 win over No. 14 TCU before sweeping Arizona State and falling to No. 8 Cal Poly.
