NEW ORLEANS – The No. 18 Tulane beach volleyball team is set to compete at home on Tuesday for the first time this season, hosting Houston Baptist in the mid-week matchup at White Sands Volleyball Courts at 11 a.m. The match is free and open to the public.
"We're looking forward to welcoming Houston Baptist in town and competing in front of our home fans," head coach Wayne Holly said. "It's a quick turnaround for us from this past weekend, which is good because we're playing very good volleyball right now. I expect to have to play very well tomorrow as HBU is a very good team and had an exceptional fall. They are big and well coached. We'll need to serve the ball well and play a smart offense to beat their big blocking. We're looking forward to the challenge."
The competition between the Green Wave and the Huskies marks the eighth meeting in program history, with Tulane earning a 7-0 career record against HBU.
Houston Baptist has yet to start its season, with its trip to New Orleans serving as the team's 2019 opener. The Huskies defeated TCU and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in their fall preseason matches after earning a 17-15 record in 2018, and are currently receiving votes in the AVCA Collegiate Beach Coaches Poll.
Tulane's competitive first weekend on the sand earned the team a 1-3 record to start the season, defeating Tampa while falling to No. 3 Florida State, No. 6 Cal Poly and No. 7 LSU in the Home2 Suites Hilton-Tallahassee State Capitol Invitational.
The Green Wave swept Tampa on day one of the tournament, with four pairs earning two-set wins and sophomore Rio Frohoff and freshman Haley Gibson pulling out a three-set victory on court three to secure the perfect 5-0 win.
Junior Tarin Mergener and sophomore Addison Hermstad also had a successful dual performance on day two in Tallahassee, capturing a three-set victory on court three against Cal Poly.
Following its Tuesday match at home, Tulane heads back on the road to Fort Worth, Texas to compete in the Horned Frog Challenge. The Green Wave are set to face No. 16 Grand Canyon, conference opponents No. 19 TCU and No. 13 Georgia State, and Missouri State in the weekend tournament.
