Beach Volleyball to Face Five Ranked Opponents in Challenging Road Weekend
Mar 28, 2019 | Women's Beach Volleyball
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane beach volleyball team (14-8, 5-6 CCSA) is headed to Miami this weekend to compete in a challenging FIU Surf 'N Turf tournament, matching up against five ranked opponents on Friday and Saturday.
The Green Wave open their weekend on the sand with a 10:30 a.m. matchup against No. 3 Florida State and a 4:30 p.m. competition against No. 15 Florida Atlantic. Tulane is then set to face No. 8 Florida International, No. 20 TCU and No. 10 Stetson on day two of the invitational, playing at 7:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., respectively.
"This event is always full of great competition, and this year is no different," head coach Wayne Holly said. "It's a big weekend for us against some of the best teams in our conference. We need to continue to find our edge and ramp up our urgency and aggression on the court. We'll also need to play well in the wind. We always get a nice wind there, and that changes the game positively for players who know how to use it."Â
Tulane went 3-1 in the team's last time out in the Tiger Beach Challenge, defeating Southern Miss, North Florida and Spring Hill while dropping a tough match to No. 4 LSU. The Green Wave's No. 1 and 2 pairs, in junior Kaylie McHugh and sophomore Addison Hermstad and sophomores Rio Frohoff and Lauren Orlich, both went 3-1 in the weekend tournament.
Tulane's first weekend opponent is 14-4 so far this season, having defeated ten ranked opponents in 2019. The Green Wave fell to the Seminoles earlier this season in their weekend opener and are looking to earn their first-ever win over FSU as they head into the weekend with an 0-11 career record.
FAU owns a 9-6 record this season, taking down conference opponents TCU, South Carolina and UAB to head into Miami with a 3-3 CCSA record. Tulane has earned a 2-4 overall record against Florida Atlantic, with the Green Wave's most recent win over the Owls coming during this weekend last season, in the 2018 FIU Surf 'N Turf.
A difficult 2019 schedule puts FIU at a current 8-5 record, defeating Georgia State and FAU to earn an undefeated 2-0 mark in conference action. The Green Wave own a 2-6 career record against the Panthers, winning their most recent match in five sets in last year's Surf 'N Turf.
TCU has gone 10-10 so far in 2019, tallying an even 2-2 record in CCSA play after beating No. 16 Georgia State and No. 17 Tulane in the Horned Frog Challenge. The Green Wave look to remain on top in their career record over the Horned Frogs this weekend, having gone 3-2 in the team's previous five matchups.
Tulane's final weekend opponent, Stetson, posts a 16-4 record this year while going 2-0 in conference action after notching wins over No. 13 Georgia State and No. 8 Long Beach State. The Green Wave look for win number three over the Hatters this Saturday, owning a current 2-6 overall record against the team.
