COLUMBIA, South Carolina – The Tulane beach volleyball team (16-15, 7-11 CCSA) dropped two matches on day two of the Palmetto Invitational, falling to College of Charleston and Missouri State to close out its regular season competition.
"A disappointing day as we were unable to overcome ourselves to make enough plays as a team to win," head coach Wayne Holly said.
The Green Wave proved success from courts one and two against Missouri State, with juniors Kaylie McHugh and Eva Torruella and sophomore Lauren Orlich and Tarin Mergener both earning victories on the sand.
The No. 1 pair notched a straight-set win over Julia Hanson and Kelsey Larsen, 21-13 and 21-15, while the duo on court two defeated Chloee McDaniel and Mikaela Mosquera in two sets, 22-20 and 21-15.
Torruella and McHugh were just short of pulling out the three-set win from the No. 1 spot in the first match of the day, winning the first 21-13. The pair dropped set two with a tight 23-25 score before ultimately falling in the tiebreaker, 11-15.
From the No. 4 position, sophomores Morgan Esters and Gabriella Becerra also forced a three-set match, taking the first set 21-15 before falling in the second, 10-21. The duo was almost able to pull off the victory to get things going for Tulane, but dropped the third set in a close 14-16 finish.
Tulane is set to head to Emerson, Georgia next weekend to compete in the CCSA Conference Championship from Friday, April 19 to Sunday, April 21.
