Apr 18, 2019 | Women's Beach Volleyball
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane beach volleyball team (16-15, 7-11 CCSA) is headed to Emerson, Georgia this weekend to compete in the CCSA Conference Championship, as the ninth-seeded Green Wave look to return home to New Orleans with their first-ever title.
"In a season of adversity, we have a wonderful opportunity to finish strong by coming together and playing our best volleyball," head coach Wayne Holly said. "The sense of our team is that we are capable of having a very strong tournament and erasing the memory of some disappointments earlier. We're different now than we were just a few days ago. We have a strong pool against two very good teams, with which we are very familiar. We've prepared well and can't wait to start playing."
Tulane is set to open competition against South Carolina on Friday at 10:30 a.m. on courts six through ten. The team will then face Georgia State at 1:30 p.m. on courts one through five.
Tulane is in group four, alongside four-seeded South Carolina and five-seeded Georgia State. Group one includes No. 1 Florida State, No. 8 College of Charleston and No. 12 Southern Mississippi, group two is made up of No. 2 LSU, No. 7 TCU and No. 11 UNC Wilmington and group three features No. 3 Florida International, No. 6 Florida Atlantic and No. 10 UAB.
The 12 teams will participate in pool play on Friday, with an elimination round and quarterfinal competition on Saturday, followed by semifinals and the final championship on Sunday.Â
Tulane has seen both of its day one opponents this season, falling to No. 11 South Carolina in last weekend's Palmetto Invitational. The Olive and Blue dropped two matches this year to No. 16 Georgia State, with the second coming in a hard-fought 2-3 loss in the Horned Frog Challenge.
The Gamecocks head into the postseason with an 18-9 record on the sand, most recently defeating No. 2 USC and Florida Gulf Coast in their last regular season competition.
The Panthers own a current 21-11 record, going 3-0 last weekend in the Austin Peay Tournament. Georgia State defeated Lincoln Memorial, Carson-Newman and Austin Peay, sweeping all of its opponents.
Championship results throughout the weekend can be accessed at the CCSA website, while both the semifinal and final matches will be broadcast live.
Tulane was seeded sixth in last year's CCSA Championship, going 2-2 with wins over UAB and College of Charleston.
