NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University sailing team took runner-up honors at the 2019 Southeastern Intercollegiate Sailing Association Coed Championship after posting a total score of 52.
The two-day event took place on Lake Pontchartrain at Municipal Yacht Harbor and featured teams from Texas A&M Galveston, Texas, Colorado, Texas A&M, North Texas and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
"We narrowly missed out on winning the championship today, but overall I'm really happy with our performance today" head coach Charles Higgins said.
Tulane finished just six points behind Texas A&M Galveston, which closed the regatta with 46 points.
"I think everybody on the team certainly recognizes that the freshman that came in this year provided a huge competitive bump for us and that certainly shows up for in practice and in regattas," Higgins said. "Their additions have made practice much more competitive and that makes everyone better and down the road that's going to be incredibly valuable."
Tulane's Division A boat highlighted competition for the Green Wave as it took first, defeating Texas A&M University at Galveston. The Green Wave's victory in Division A marked the first time in three years that Texas A&M Galveston's top finisher had not come out on top.
Freshmen Ciara Rodriguez-Horan, senior Grace Bloomfield and senior Sophie Ricker each turned winning races for the Green Wave in Division A.
