Men’s Tennis Scores 4-3 Comeback Win at Memphis
Apr 7, 2019 | Men's Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Despite dropping the doubles point and facing a 3-2 deficit, the Tulane men's tennis team roared back with two late singles victories to capture its fifth straight win and upend American Athletic Conference foe Memphis, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
The win marked the third time this season the Green Wave (13-11) came back to win without securing the doubles point. The other two occasions came against Tennessee and Florida State at ITA Kickoff Weekend in late January.
"This was a huge character-building conference road win for the guys, coming from behind after losing the doubles point against a very tough Memphis program, indoors," director of tennis and head coach Mark Booras said. "It was a great collegiate atmosphere with a ton of fans."
Ranked 40th nationally, Tulane got a 6-3 doubles win on court two from Hamish Stewart and Akos Kotorman, but the Tigers (11-11) collected wins on courts one and three, respectively, to snag a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
The see-saw battle swayed back in the Green Wave's favor when Stewart nailed down a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jan Pallares on court two, before 79th-ranked Ewan Moore defeated Chris Patzanovsky by the same score on court one to give Tulane its first advantage of the day, 2-1.
Memphis countered with consecutive wins of its own however, as the Tigers closed out a three-set win on court three, followed by a straight-set victory on court six to reclaim the lead, 3-2, and push Tulane to the brink.
"I'm happy with the way they dealt with adversity, turned things around in singles and then finished well in some tough surroundings," Booras said. "I like how everybody stepped up and got the job done."
The Green Wave remained stable as Kotorman hung on for a tight, 6-4, 6-4 win over Oscar Cutting on court five, while Dane Esses bounced back from a lost first set to win the second, 6-2, and jump out to a 3-0 advantage in the third frame. Esses maintained his groove, winning the deciding set, 6-3, to clinch the match.
Tulane will get a chance to catch its breath with six days off before heading to Houston for the final match of the regular season at Rice next Saturday, April 13.
