Tulane Athletics Posts Strong Performances in the Classroom
May 13, 2019 | General
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University continued its excellence in the classroom, as 11 Green Wave teams achieved a multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 990 or better in the latest 2017-18 NCAA data report.
The Tulane men's tennis team highlighted this year's report as it earned national recognition for ninth consecutive year for having a perfect 1,000 multi-year rate. In addition, six Tulane teams saw its APR numbers improve from the 2016-17 NCAA data report.
"This is an incredible achievement by our student-athletes," Director of Athletics Troy Dannen said. "The work they have shown in the classroom truly indicates the commitment our student-athletes have in excelling in the classroom to prepare them for future success. I also would like to thank our coaches and academic staff for their contribution to our student-athletes' achievement."
The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every NCAA Division I athletics team. The most recent scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
"Our student-athletes continue to be leaders in academic excellence and I could not be more excited about our departmental success," Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academics Charvi Greer said.
The goal of academic reform is improvement, not punishment. Not only does academic reform ensure accountability for student-athletes, teams and institutions, but it also provides fairness by considering individual circumstances per team and school.
Implemented in 2003 as part of an ambitious academic reform effort in NCAA Division I, APR holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.
