Rotich Named League Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Jul 9, 2019 | Cross Country, Track & Field
NEW ORLEANS – The American Athletic Conference announced on Tuesday morning that Green Wave distance runner Emmanuel Rotich has been named the league's Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The honor – given annually to one deserving senior in each of the league's 22 sports – comes with a $2,000 scholarship that will be awarded to Rotich as he pursues his master's degree at Tulane as well.
In order to win this award, Rotich had to maintain excellent academic standards and put together an outstanding athletic year.
There's no doubt Rotich was tremendous on every cross country course he touched in 2018. Winning the American Athletic Conference Championship in driving rain at Audubon Park, Rotich followed that with another berth in the national championship race in Wisconsin in November.
Though not counting toward this league honor, Rotich was also stellar in the outdoor track season, winning the league title in the 3K steeplechase and 5K. He went on to participate in the national championship meet outdoors as well.
Rotich finished his undergraduate degree from Tulane this year, majoring in architecture. He has begun his master's classes and will be earning a degree in real estate development.
Rotich is the second individual cross country or track athlete honored by The American with an end-of-year award. In 2016, Lilla McMillan claimed The American's Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award.
