NEW ORLEANS – Less than two months after reaching the second round of the Wimbledon main draw, Tulane men's tennis alum Dominik Koepfer secured a spot in the main draw of the 2019 U.S. Open with a win in the final round of qualifying Friday afternoon in Queens, New York.
The No. 11 seed in the qualifying draw, Koepfer defeated world No. 141 Yasutaka Uchiyama of Japan in convincing fashion, 6-3, 6-4, while never facing a break point in the match to earn a bid in his second consecutive Grand Slam tournament of the 2019 season.
He advances to face world No. 97 Jaume Munar of Spain in the first round on Monday, August 26 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Currently ranked No. 113 in the ATP world rankings, Koepfer will enter the top 100 for the first time in his professional career with a victory over Munar.
Koepfer defeated American Ryan Harrison, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round of qualifying earlier this week, before outlasting world No. 159 Nicolas Mahut of France, 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3, in Wednesday's second round. Mahut previously held a career-high ATP ranking of 37 in 2014.
