Tulane Football Rolls Past Missouri State, 58-6
Sep 14, 2019 | Football
Three Tulane (2-1) players accounted for two touchdowns apiece, led by true freshman running back Tyjae Spears who amassed 177 total yards from scrimmage. He rushed eight times for a team-high 89 yards and one score, while accounting for 88 yards and another touchdown on his lone reception.
Sophomore running back Amare Jones and redshirt senior quarterback Justin McMillan ran in two scores, respectively, as Jones racked up 169 all-purpose yards on the night with 73 rushing, 15 receiving, 60 kickoff return and 21 punt return yards.
On the defensive side, sophomore safety Larry Brooks recorded two of the team's three interceptions, as the Green Wave tallied six tackles for loss and held Missouri State (0-2) to just 182 yards of offense and 11 first downs.
The Green Wave scored on each of their first three possessions, beginning with a field goal 23-yard field goal by Merek Glover on the opening drive. Jones ran in a pair of touchdowns on the Wave's subsequent two possessions from distances of three and 57 yards, respectively, to build a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter.
P.J. Hall returned an interception 30 yards for Tulane's third score of the game, increasing the advantage to 24-0.
Missouri State responded with a five play, 75-yard touchdown drive that took two minutes off the clock with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, but had the extra point attempt blocked.
McMillan followed up with back-to-back rushing scores from four yards and one yard out inside the final seven minutes to send Tulane into the locker room at halftime with a 38-6 lead.
Redshirt junior and backup quarterback Keon Howard took over under center midway through the third quarter, and on the first snap, dumped off a screen pass to Spears who ran it all the way down the far sideline for an 88-yard touchdown.
The catch was the first of Spears' career and the Green Wave's longest play from scrimmage since a 90-yard scoring reception by Teddy Veal against Army in 2015.
After Brooks' second interception of the night was returned into Bears' red zone, redshirt freshman running back Ygenio Booker punched in his first career touchdown just three plays later on a rush from three yards out to push Tulane over 50 points in a non-conference game for the first time since scoring 66 against Southern in 2016.
Spears broke free for a 52-yard rushing touchdown along the near sideline for the Green Wave's final score of the night with just over three minutes remaining in the game.
