Moore Wins Singles Draw at Gamecock Invitational
Sep 22, 2019 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - Senior Ewan Moore defeated the highest ranked opponent of his career to win the Black singles draw, highlighting an impressive final day of action for the Tulane men's tennis team at the Gamecock Fall Invitational on Sunday.
Ranked No. 36 nationally, Moore needed three sets to defeat his third ranked opponent of the weekend, but outlasted No. 17 Adam Walton from the University of Tennessee to win the draw and improve his record to 4-0 on the weekend. The victory was his third over a top-20 player in his career and first since defeating then-No. 18 Gabriel Decamps of UCF last spring.
Ranked 61st in the ITA singles poll, senior Luis Erlenbusch also rattled off an upset - his second in as many days - when he defeated No. 51 Bojan Jankulovski of Miami (Fla.) in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, to win the consolation final in the Garnet draw. Junior and 110th-ranked Hamish Stewart finished the weekend on a high note, cruising past Arizona State's Benjamin Hannestad, 6-1, 6-3.
In Destin, Fla., at the Tops'l Battle at the Beach, senior Tim Ruetzel accounted for Tulane's lone victory, closing out the weekend with a 2-1 singles record with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over LSU's Joey Thomas.
Up next, the Green Wave travel to Athens, Ga., to compete in the 2019 Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the University of Georgia. The first of three straight days of competition begins Friday, September 27 at the Magill Tennis Complex.
