Tulane Athletics Continues to Give Back to the Community
Jan 17, 2020 | General
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University Athletics ranks among the nation's best in community outreach, as the Green Wave earned a No. 5 ranking in the Helper Helper NCAA Team Works Community Service Challenge.
Â
The No. 5 ranking serves as the highest ever for the Green Wave, which also finished in the competition's Top 25 for the third consecutive season.
Â
"Our student-athletes truly care about their local community and these numbers are living proof of that commitment," Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academic Services and Senior Woman Administrator Dr. Charvi Greer said. "This competition is centered around helping others and I could not be more proud of our student-athletes' desire to help others who are in need."
Â
The competition, which ran from September through November, is based on the number of service hours completed and the number of participating student-athletes. Helper Helper tallies the school participation throughout the competition.
Â
Over the course of the three-month period, Tulane student-athletes volunteered over 3,100 hours of service to the community through several local organizations.
Â
Over the past three years alone, Tulane student-athletes have donated over 10,000 hours of community service.
Â
NCAA Team Works, which coordinates community service efforts at NCAA championships, and Helper Helper, a volunteer management and tracking platform, launched the community service competition to recognize student-athletes who give back to their communities.
Â
This is the fifth NCAA Team Works Helper Helper Community Service Competition. In all, student-athletes combined this year to do more than 173,820 hours of community service in a total of 4,432 opportunities with local organizations. The tally represents a 34 percent increase from last year's challenge.
