Tulane Football Visits Cook Children’s Hospital
Jan 2, 2020 | Football
FORT WORTH, Texas – Players from the Tulane University football team visited Cook Children's Hospital, on Thursday as part of the events around the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl.
The Green Wave players visited with patients from the children's hospital to play games and learn more about their day-to-day actives. The players also competed in a trivia competition with Southern Miss at the hospital.
"One thing that is special about my job is that I get to see the unabashed joy on our patients' faces when they get to interact with special visitors," Cook Children's Community Program Coordinator Megan Hodges Cook said. "Today our special visitors were college football players from Tulane and Southern Miss. When I think of football players, I think of big, muscular guys with a game face that is intense and focused, but when these football players come to our hospital, we get a totally different experience. We get to see these big guys sitting in preschool size chairs, coloring, smiling, inviting patients to play and giving away stuffed animals. We see these players playing air hockey or video games with patients like its nothing out of the ordinary. The joy that these interactions bring to the patients is undeniable. The energy in the air changes as the patients and families delight and soak in the moments of undivided attention that they get from these football players."
Cook Children's serves the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas community with a goal to improve the health of every child in the region through the prevention and treatment of illness, disease and injury.
"The football team's presence here in the hospital has the power to change the day, or the outlook of our patients, from a hard or difficult day, into a day they will never forget, or into a day gets them through a difficult treatment," Hodges Cook said. "On a day like today, we hope the players walk away with a fun experience, but we know without a doubt that our patients have."
The visit had an impact on the patients, the hospital and the players.
"It made me feel good to see the kids smile and make them happy and for me to enjoy their time and for them to enjoy mine," sophomore defensive end Juan Monjarres said.
