One Last Wave: Men’s Tennis’ Moore, Erlenbusch to Return in 2020-21
Jun 12, 2020 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – After having their final seasons abbreviated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tulane director of tennis and men's head coach Mark Booras announced that senior student-athletes Ewan Moore and Luis Erlenbusch will return Uptown for the 2020-21 campaign.
Moore's and Erlenbusch's decision came following an announcement by the NCAA granting an extra year of eligibility to all student-athletes competing in spring sports whose 2020 seasons were canceled due to the novel coronavirus.
"It's great that our seniors are getting an opportunity to finish their senior year the right way," Booras said. "I know they are excited about coming back because, in their words, they had some unfinished business to take care of. Ewan and Luis have a ton of experience at the top of our lineup. I'm thrilled to have them back to give our lineup a big boost and lead our team toward success."
Members of the program each of the last four seasons, Moore and Erlenbusch have helped the Green Wave reach three consecutive NCAA Tournaments from 2017-19 as well as the program's first appearance in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in 2019. They were also integral parts of the 2017-18 team that claimed Tulane's first American Athletic Conference championship in the post-Katrina era.
An Ayrshire, Scotland native, Moore has racked up a combined 104 total wins, including 67 in singles and 37 in doubles. In each of his first three full seasons, Moore earned All-American Athletic Conference honors, which includes AAC Freshman of the Year honors in 2017.
For the 2019-20 campaign, Moore went 14-11 overall in singles and 5-5 at the No. 1 spot in the lineup during the spring. He reached as high as No. 32 in the ITA national singles rankings and finished the season No. 72 in the poll while earning six wins over nationally-ranked sopponents. Moore defeated the nation's No. 6 player, Christian Sigsgaard of third-ranked Texas, on March 6.
Playing primarily at the No. 1 and No. 2 spot in the singles lineup all four years, Moore posted 18 singles victories over nationally-ranked opponents. He reached the second round of the 2019 NCAA Singles Championship, as well as the second round of the 2018 NCAA Doubles Championship with teammate Constantin Schmitz.
A Bruchsal, Germany native and 2019 All-American Athletic Conference selection in singles, Erlenbusch has compiled 112 combined singles and doubles wins in three-plus seasons, as his 72 singles victories are the most among active players on the team. He has recorded 11 wins over nationally-ranked opponents in less than two years, while reaching the top 50 of the ITA's national singles rankings on multiple occasions.
During the 2019-20 season, Erlenbusch posted an 11-10 overall singles record and a combined 6-4 mark playing No. 3 and No. 4 singles during the spring. He also compiled three wins over nationally-ranked opponents.
