Full Release
LEXINGTON, Kentucky — The United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced on Monday that the Tulane beach volleyball team was one of 41 NCAA Division I programs to receive the 2019-20 Team Academic Award.
"We were extremely excited to earn the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award. I am super proud of our team for being able to remain at the top academically among thousands of student-athletes across the nation," head coach Eyal Zimet said. "Showing the exact type of traits the NCAA envisioned when first providing the opportunities to combine athletics and academics in the U.S."
A record-breaking 1,313 teams earned this year's award, which honors collegiate and high school beach and indoor volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of a 3.30. The Green Wave's cumulative GPA for this past academic year was 3.56.
Tulane was one of just five schools in the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) to have received the award.
"The commitment level, sacrifice and hard work that goes into prioritizing and managing our time in the best possible way to excel on the sand and in the classroom will never go unnoticed. Especially during times of such uncertainty and stress is beyond admirable," Zimet added. "I can't wait to keep working with this special group of committed student-athletes and aim even higher!"
