TULANE HEADS TO SOUTHERN MISS
- The Green Wave travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., on Saturday, as they head to Southern Miss for their second road game of the season. The game will be aired live on Stadium and kickoff at 1:30 p.m.
- Tulane and Southern Miss met every year from 1979 to 2006 - a span of 28 straight years in what became known as the "Battle for the Bell".
- Tulane's matchup with Southern Miss will mark the Green Wave's first trip to Southern Miss since 2009.
- The Green Wave will faceoff against Southern Miss for the 32nd time. Southern Miss owns a 23-8 all-time series lead against Tulane.
- Tulane will be in search of back-to-back wins over Southern Miss for the first time since the 1983-84 seasons.
FIRST AND 10
1. Tulane has not won its first two road games to start a season since 1998.
2. Willie Fritz coached teams have traditionally bounced back after suffering their first loss to a season. Throughout his coaching career, Fritz's teams have posted a 19-5 mark the week after suffering their first loss to a season.
3. Green Wave starting quarterback Keon Howard returns to Southern Miss. Howard began his collegiate career at USM where he spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons. In two seasons with the Golden Eagles, Howard started nine games and threw nine touchdowns.
4. Tulane has 12 players on its 2020 roster that are from the state of Mississippi which include: Nick Anderson, Cameron Carroll, Joey Claybrook, Kiland Harrison, Nik Hogan, Keon Howard, Jeffery Johnson, Stephon Huderson, Trey Tuggle, Will Wallace, Duece Watts and Phat Watts.
5. Tulane's defensive line has made life difficult for opposing offenses, averaging 9.5 tackles for loss per game which ranks No. 8 nationally among FBS teams.
6. Redshirt sophomore running back Cameron Carroll rushed for a pair of touchdowns for the second straight game and now has four on the season. Carroll's four rushing touchdowns rank No. 4 nationally among FBS individuals.
7. Freshman running back Tyjae Spears posted another career-high rushing performance, as he dashed for 119 yards last week against Navy. He is the third freshman running back since 2001 to rush for 100 yards or more twice in a season.
8. Tulane has rushed for at least 100 yards in 55 consecutive games dating back to the end of the 2015 season.
9. The Green Wave enter their matchup with Southern Miss having rushed for over 250 yards in eight of their last 17 games (337 vs. UL-Lafayette -2018, 350 vs. FIU - 2019, 298 vs. Missouri State - 2019, 325 vs. Houston - 2019, 324 vs. Army - 2019, 311 vs. UConn - 2019 and 290 vs. Tulsa - 2019 and 265 vs. Navy - 2020). The Green Wave have also surpassed 200 yards rushing in 11 of their last 15 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.
10. Defensive linemen Patrick Johnson and Cameron Sample are tied for 14th nationally in sacks per game, as both players are averaging 1.0 sack per game. Both players were recognized in the preseason as Top 250 prospects by the Reese's Senior Bowl.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN MISS
- Southern Miss welcomes Tulane to The Rock for its third straight home game to open the season.
- Interim coach Scott Walden made his debut last week against Louisiana Tech which marked the first time in program history that the Golden Eagles had an interim coach in the middle of a season. Walden, who is 30 years old, is the youngest head coach at the FBS level.
- Southern Miss has captured five-straight winning seasons and 23 over the last 26. The school established its record for seasonal wins in 2011 with 12.
- USM is 122-63-2 against the current membership of the American Athletic Conference, including 40-22-1 vs. Memphis, 27-12 vs. East Carolina, 23-8 vs. Tulane, 7-8 vs. Cincinnati, 9-5 vs. Houston, 6-2 vs. UCF, 3-4-1 vs. Tulsa, 3-1 vs. SMU and USF and 1-0 vs. Navy.
- Quarterback Jack Abraham leads the way offensively for the Golden Eagles. Last week against Louisiana Tech, Abraham posted his fifth game of his career of throwing at least three touchdown passes.
- Redshirt junior Ky'el Hemby highlights the Golden Eagle defense as the team's top tackler from a season ago. In his junior campaign, Hemby notched 93 tackles with a pair of interceptions to lead the way for the Golden Eagles.
