How NOLA Built Me: The People Behind The People
Jan 19, 2021 | General
The city of New Orleans is world renowned, from the French Quarter to the Saint Charles Streetcar, people come from far and wide to soak up the city’s glory. Tulane resides in the heart of the Crescent City. The Uptown campus is surrounded by beautiful streets covered by large oak tree canopies and provides a special college experience for all who come to learn.
Athletics department staff members work tirelessly behind the scenes to accommodate and enhance the unique Tulane student-athlete experience in college athletics. Some of these individuals come from beyond the Louisiana borders, but have lived in the city for so long and experienced as much, if not more, than those who have never left New Orleans. They've made the city their home, realize how special the Crescent City is and how it has shaped their professional careers. In this piece, staff members reflect on their short-term and decades-long journeys in New Orleans and how they've become NOLA Built!

“I cannot imagine doing what I’ve done in my career anywhere but New Orleans because the city has so much to show and offer. A Tulane education is a selling point of its own, but the fact that the fact the university is in New Orleans a lagniappe. It’s a little something extra, and it’s a little something extra every day. It’s a different place with a different pule. It’s alive. You can wake up with no plans and have a world-class weekend in New Orleans.”
“Being born in the New Orleans area, I’ve been so fortunate to have spent the last 23 years working in such a great city. Working at Tulane has been so very rewarding. As a young man, I admired everything that Tulane stood for academically, socially and athletically. I’m so proud to be a Tulanian.”

“The city of New Orleans adopted me as one of its own when I started working at Tulane. My experiences engaging with colleagues and student-athletes in the workplace, university community and city as a whole have provided me the opportunity to expand my horizons as college athletics administrator.”

“When the opportunity presented itself in 2007, it was hard to turn my back on the rebuilding of an athletics department with such a rich history as Tulane’s in one of the greatest American cities in the country that was two years removed from one of the worst natural disasters in our nation’s history. The culture and the people of New Orleans are what truly makes this city great. Tulane’s emphasis on public service taught me what is really important, and that is community.”
