Nov 13, 2021 | Football
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University football team suffered a heartbreaking 20-13 setback in overtime to Tulsa University Saturday evening on Homecoming inside Yulman Stadium.
Trailing 13-3 with just under four minutes remaining in the game and having the ball on their own five-yard line, Tulane's hopes of a homecoming victory looked all but gone.
Four plays later however, hope was restored in a big way, as the Green Wave marched 95 yards in just four plays to cut Tulsa's lead to 13-10. Quarterback Michael Pratt connected with wide receivers Jha'Quan Jackson and Phat Watts for gains of 45 and 49 yards, respectively.
Pratt's 49-yard pass to Watts was good for a touchdown, which gave the Green Wave life with 2:52 remaining in the game.
Following the Green Wave's fourth successful onside kick of the year, the Green Wave were poised for the go-ahead touchdown, as they marched into Tulsa territory and had the ball first and goal at the seven-yard line. After three unsuccessful tries to go in for the go-ahead score, Tulane settled for a field goal and appeared to be headed for overtime.
Taking over offensively with 1:31 to go in the game, Tulsa's bid for the go-ahead score was put on hold as defensive back Macon Clark stepped in front of a Davis Brin pass and returned it 12 yards the other way to set up a go-ahead field goal by Merek Glover. Glover's 26-yard kick sailed wide right with four seconds remaining which sent the game into overtime.
In the overtime session, Tulsa scored on its first possession and held the Green Wave scoreless in the extra frame to secure the win.
Tulane's defense highlighted the afternoon after registered 4.0 sacks, 8.0 tackles for loss and four turnovers. The Green Wave defensive unit also held Tulsa to 382 yards.
Nick Anderson and Clark led way defensively for the Green Wave, as they registered nine tackles apiece. Senior Kevin Henry also turned in a strong defensive performance, as he tallied 2.5 tackles for loss, registered a sack and had an interception.
Pratt finished the game with 178 yards passing and threw a touchdown for the 18th time in his 19-game collegiate career. Running back Tyjae Spears continued his impressive finish to the 2021 campaign, as he rushed for 104 yards on just 14 carries (7.4 yards per carry).
Tulsa opened the scoring in the first quarter, as it went 75 yards on its first drive of the game. The Golden Hurricane took six minutes off the clock before Brin found Ezra Naylor II in the endzone for a 10-yard pitch and catch.
The Golden Hurricane extended their lead to 10-0 after Zack Long connected on a 30-yard field. Tulane would respond with 9:26 remaining in the first half, as Glover drilled a 40-yard field goal.
Tulsa added another field goal to close out the first half to take 13-3 lead into the locker room.

Brin threw for a game-high 188 yards, completing 19-of-30 passes.
