Blue Defeats Olive in Beach Volleyball's Inter-Squad Scrimmage
Feb 21, 2021 | Women's Beach Volleyball
NEW ORLEANS — Tulane beach volleyball's Blue team defeated Olive in the team's first-ever inter-squad scrimmage on Saturday morning, serving as the Green Wave's final tuneup before the start of the 2021 season next weekend.
The Blue team, comprised of graduate students Eva Torruella, Tarin Mergener, Allison Olsonoski and Laura Masciullo, senior Morgan Esters, sophomores Kendall Peters and Ashton Mares and freshmen Maddie Speicher, Savka Popovic and Sophia Gammarino, recorded a 4-1 win on the sand over the Olive team's graduate student Avery Arellano, seniors Addie Hermstad, Rio Frohoff and Gabriella Becerra, junior Haley Gibson, sophomore Samantha Mehlman, freshmen Lara Torruella, Julie Soeller, Addison Peeler and assistant coach Katie Horton.
This competition marked the first time Tulane's squad was able to come together and show off what the team has been working on since the fall. The Green Wave's roster this season features 10 returners and nine newcomers — three graduate transfers and six freshmen — who are eager to compete in a full spring slate after the 2020 season was cut short.
The Olive and Blue are set to host their first of three home tournaments in their season-opening weekend on Friday and Saturday, welcoming UNO and UAB on day one at 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. before facing Utah and Southeastern Louisiana on day two at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
