Tulane’s Second Half Surge Falls Short at Wichita State

WICHITA, Kansas – Redshirt junior Jordan Walker scored a game-high 23 points, but it was not enough as the Tulane University men's basketball team (7-6; 2-6 AAC) suffered a hard-fought 75-67 loss on the road to Wichita State Wednesday night inside Charles Koch Arena.

Walker scored 17 of his season-high 23 points in the second half, as he connected on 7-of-12 shots from the field. Walker also dished out a team-high four assists.

Reigning American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week Tylan Pope joined Walker in double figures as he finished with 13 points which marked the third straight game he has scored in double figures. Pope also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Tulane continued its strong free throw shooting percentage, as it connected on 88 percent from the free throw line. The Green Wave entered the game shooting a league-best .778 percent from the charity stripe.

The Green Wave also maintained their strong defensive play, as they totaled seven turnovers and forced Wichita State into 13 turnovers. Tulane committed just six miscues and won the turnover battle for the 11th time in its last 13 contests.

Wichita State held a 31-19 lead at the break after it outshot Tulane 40.0-18.8 percent from the floor. Tulane was just 2-of-14 from the beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes. Walker led all Green Wave scorers with six first half points.

Coming out of the locker room, Tulane remained close, as it trimmed Wichita State's lead to 10 (39-29) at the 15:45 mark. The Shockers would then go on a 20-9 run over the next eight minutes to open up a 21-point lead with just over 7:30 remaining and appeared to have the game well in hand.

The Green Wave had other ideas, as they responded in a big way going on a 13-0 run to trim the Shockers' lead to eight with 4:54 to go in the game. Tulane would remain within striking distance for the remainder of the game, but would get no closer than six points.

With the win, Wichita State improved to 5-0 all-time against Tulane.

The Green Wave's 48 second-half points were a season high. Tulane has now scored 45 points-or-more in each of its last three games.

Up next, Tulane welcomes Cincinnati on Sunday, February 7. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. (CT) and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
