Muraskaite Places Third in Heptathlon at Crimson Tide Invitational
Apr 9, 2021 | Track & Field
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. —The Tulane track and field team finished up the second day of the Crimson Tide Invitational on Friday at the University of Alabama.
The events for the heptathlon closed out after a long afternoon Friday of multi-events as well. Migle Muraskaite placed third in the heptathlon with 5373 points, crushing the previous outdoor record at Tulane. She also won the 800m (2:19.20) and the shot put (12.62m). Muraskaite's 100m hurdle time of 14.27 was good for a personal record and sixth all-time in the Tulane record book. With Muraskaite's impressive performance, she currently leads the American Athletic Conference for the heptathlon and ranks with one of the top marks in the country.
Kristen O'Handley had to withdraw today after an injury, but left with a strong feeling of accomplishment after her performance Friday. She won the 200m (24.75) and her new personal record 100m hurdle time of 14.19 earned her a fifth-place spot in the Green Wave's record book. She also recorded a personal record in the shot put with her throw of 11.30m.
"Though they both posted strong scores for the first day, Muraskaite was a little down on herself after the 200m, but like great athletes do, she found some perspective and came back today to finish very strong," director of cross country and track and field Eric Peterson said. "Her performance today was just awesome, and as a result, she broke the school record. O'Handley should be fine. I decided to pull her out to take a more conservative approach to make sure she is healthy for the conference championships. I am really proud of the way they both competed here."
