Sherman Named Tulane Football Running Backs Coach
Feb 14, 2022 | Football
NEW ORLEANS - Tulane University head football coach Willie Fritz announced today the addition of Derrick Sherman as the program's running backs coach.
"I have known and coached with Derrick for several years," Fritz said. "He has always had such a great rapport with our staff, our players and everyone he comes in contact with. We are very excited to have Derrick and his family rejoining our program."
Sherman makes his return to Tulane following a season as the wide receivers coach for Georgia Southern. Under Sherman, flex option Amare Jones was named All-Sun Belt Conference First Team by Pro Football Network and receiver Khaleb Hood earned Honorable Mention honors in the 2021 season.
Prior to his return to Georgia Southern, Sherman spent three seasons with Samford University. In his first two seasons, he worked specifically with the team's wide receivers. In 2019, wide receiver A.J. Toney was named to the Southern Conference's All-Freshman team. Sherman was elevated to the offensive coordinator and running backs coach for the Bulldogs for the 2020 season before it was halted due to COVID-19.
Under Sherman's guidance in 2018, senior wide receiver Kelvin McKnight caught 100 passes for a school-record 1,453 yards and nine touchdowns. McKnight was named first-team All-SoCon and an All-American.
Sherman came to Samford after spending two seasons as an offensive analyst at Tulane.
Prior to Tulane, Sherman made coaching stops at Pittsburg State as the wide receivers coach in 2015 and Georgia Southern University where he served as an offensive graduate assistant coach in 2014. Before his first stint at Georgia Southern, Sherman served as wide receivers coach at Southwest Baptist University in 2012 and West Virginia State University in 2013.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sherman played two seasons at Purdue University (2007-08), before finishing his collegiate career at Morgan State University (2009-11). He served as a team captain at MSU during his senior season.
Sherman earned a bachelor's degree in communications from Morgan State in May 2012 and his master's degree in education from Georgia Southern in 2015.
Sherman is married to the former Sadie Clark. The couple has a son, Xayden.
