NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane University beach volleyball program was recognized by the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Monday as one of more than 1,200 collegiate and high school teams to have earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2021-22 season.
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.
The Green Wave earned a cumulative GPA of 3.618 this past school year. Samantha Green, Samantha Mehlman, Lara Torruella and Emily Heintzelman led the Olive and Blue in the classroom each earning a 4.0 at some point in the year.
Tulane was one of just five schools in the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) to have received the award. Women's collegiate beach set a record with 54 teams receiving the honor this season.
