
No. 17 Bowling Travels to New Jersey this Weekend for the Northeast Classic

New Orleans – The No. 17 ranked Tulane University bowling team continues the 2022-23 season with a trip to the Northeast Classic from Friday – Sunday at Bowlero Deptford in Deptford, New Jersey. The tournament is being hosted by Sacred Heart University. The action starts at 9:30 a.m. on Friday and then 8:25 a.m. on Saturday before a 7:25 a.m. start time on Sunday.
The Green Wave are one of 33 teams that are invited to participate in the tournament along with Adelphi, Arkansas State, Bryant, Delaware State, Duquesne, Fairleigh Dickinson, Kutztown, Long Island University, Maryville, McKendree, Medaille, Mercyhurst, Merrimack, Monmouth, Morgan State, Mount Aloysius College, Mount St. Mary's, Nebraska, NJCU, North Carolina A&T, Sacred Heart, Saint Anslem, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, St. Francis College Brooklyn, Tulane, University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, University of Central Florida, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Vanderbilt, Wagner, Wilmington and Youngstown State.
The competitive field includes 23 teams that are ranked or receiving votes in the top 25 including eight teams placed in the top 10 nationally and 14 of the top 15. All seven schools who have won the NCAA Championship are competing (Nebraska – 6, UMES – 3, SFA – 2, Vanderbilt – 2, FDU – 2, McKendree -2 and Sam Houston – 1).
The first day of competition this weekend, Jan. 20, will be five (5) five-game baker matches with total pins being the goal. In the qualifying rounds, teams will alternate lanes after each baker game until the match is complete. Tulane squares off with No. 14 nationally ranked Fairleigh Dickinson in lanes 41-42 in the first match, Wagner in lanes 35-36 in the second match, Bryant in lanes 29-30 the third match, No. 24 nationally ranked Morgan State in lanes 21-22 in the fourth match and No. 2 nationally ranked North Carolina A&T in lanes 15-16 in the fifth match.
The second day of the tournament, Jan. 21, is a format of five (5) traditional team games. The program takes on No. 12 nationally ranked Duquesne in lanes 7-8 in the sixth match, Kutztown in lanes 2-3 in the seventh match, receiving votes Monmouth in lanes 31-32 in the eighth match, St. Francis – Brooklyn in lanes 27-28 in the ninth match and no. 18 nationally ranked Mercyhurst in lanes 17-18 in the 10th match.
On the third day, Jan. 22, teams will complete in three rounds of match play in a playoff bracket. Each of the rounds in match play will be a best-of-seven baker match.
The playoff rounds will be seeded using overall total pin fall standings after the qualifying round (day one) is completed. The higher seed has the choice of starting lane for the first baker game with one exception. The exception is if the match goes to a single deciding baker game, the higher seed has the choice.
The first, second and third place teams will be awarded the team awards.
Individual awards will consist of an MVP and the All-Tournament Teams which will be based on averages for the traditional team game matches on Saturday. The First All-Tournament Team will be composed of the top 5 individual averages for players that compete in five (5) traditional team game matches. The second team will be the 6thh – 10th in individual averages for players that compete in five (5) traditional team games. A tournament MVP will be named from the winning team.
This year's Tulane bowling roster features five returners in sophomore Katharina Mente, senior Jenica Baron, junior Morgan Gitlitz, senior Amelia Vasquez and junior Yarelis Alvarez. Joining the program are three newcomers in freshman Cassidy Williams, sophomore Sofiia Druchyna and freshman Mia Stolakis.
Last time out at the Stormin' Blue & White Classic from January 8-10, the program finished ninth among a strong field with 12,556 total pins. The team put up an overall record of 7-6 over the three days of competition. Vasquez led the team with 1,061 total pins and her average of 212.20. She placed 13th overall.
This season, Gitlitz leads the team with 5,345 total pins and her average of 197.9, while Stolakis has the highest individual performance with her 266 against UMES (10/15). Tulane sports an overall 47-31 record this season through the first six tournaments.
Next, the program gets back on the lanes with a trip to Dallas, Texas to participate in the 2023 Lady Techster Classic from Feb. 10-12.
