#25 Middle Tennessee Edges Tulane with Doubles
Feb 24, 2023 | Men's Tennis
MONTGOMERY, AL – The Tulane men's tennis team fought valiantly Friday, battling 25th-ranked Middle Tennessee to an even 3-3 split in singles, but the Blue Raiders captured the deciding doubles point to escape the matchup with a 4-3 win Friday afternoon at the Blue Gray Championships in Montgomery.
The Blue Raiders improved to 11-3 in the victory, while Tulane dipped to 2-4.
The match, which was originally scheduled to start at 9 a.m., was pushed back to aid in the court-drying process brought on by overnight precipitation. The teams then flipped the format, opting to play singles first.
The Green Wave got wins at #3 via Luka Petrovic over #98 Oskar Brostrom Poulsen (6-4, 6-1), #5 with Luc Hoeijmans (7-5, 6-2) and at #6, courtesy of Rafael de Alba (5-7, 6-3, 6-3).
With the action tied after singles, Tulane also tied the doubles action with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 by Benji Jacobson and Hoeijmans. It all came down to the No. 2 doubles contest, where the Olive and Blue's Fynn Kuenkler and Sam Scherer battled Middle's Pavel Motl and Stijn Slump, but ultimately succumbed to a 7-5 defeat.
The Green Wave then faced #44 Texas Tech later in the afternoon to start its second match of the tournament. The Red Raiders got 6-3 wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to jump out with a 1-0 lead heading into Saturday morning's singles action (10:30 a.m.).
