Mar 26, 2023 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – Tulsa's Ana Naranjo Martinez fought off three match points and came back from a 5-3 third set deficit at No. 5 singles to give the 68th-ranked Golden Hurricane a 4-3 win over upstart Tulane Sunday afternoon at the City Park Tennis Center.
Tulsa improved to 11-6 overall this spring, while the Green Wave fell to 7-9.
Martinez battled Tulane's Jiayun Zhu for more than four hours in a match that ended 5-7, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3) with Martinez dominating both tiebreakers.
That contest was one of five singles matches that went to three sets, with No. 6 being the lone exception as the Olive and Blue's Brooke Theis won easily 6-1, 6-3.
The Green Wave also got singles victories from Adelaide Lavery (6-1, 1-6, 6-4) at No. 3 and Charlotte Russell (6-1, 2-6, 6-3) took down a win at No. 4.
Beforehand, the Golden Hurricane captured the doubles point, but not before Russell and Lahari Yelamanchili got a 6-1 victory at No. 1.
The Tulane program also recognized Lavery in a pre-match Senior Day ceremony on Sunday.
The Green Wave is back in action a week from Monday at UCF in its next contest.
