Green Wave Takes Down Bulls in Tampa
Apr 3, 2023 | Men's Tennis
TAMPA, FL – Tulane's Luka Petrovic and Sam Scherer won the No. 1 doubles match 7-4 in a tiebreaker to give the Green Wave the doubles point, and the momentum, as the 43rd-ranked Green Wave defeated #54 USF 4-1 Monday afternoon in Tampa.
The Olive and Blue's Fynn Kuenkler and Luc Hoeijmans also picked up a 6-2 victory in the third doubles contest.
In singles, Petrovic recorded a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win at No. 2, while Alex Bancila posted a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 4. The clinching point came at No. 3 where Hoeijmans finished off USF's Erik Grevelius 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Kuenkler's and Rafael de Alba's matches at Nos. 1 and 5, respectively, went unfinished.
"This was a great team win," said Tulane head coach Mark Booras. "We got another good start in doubles, which I'm probably most pleased with, because it's one of the areas we struggled with at the beginning of the year. So to see some back-to-back (positive) results in doubles is reassuring that these guys are growing and learning, putting things into play.
"It was a dead-even match all way around and I liked how our guys finished off the last two points in two sets when things were starting to creep the other way. They continued to believe in themselves and put things on the line. They moved toward the adversity and ended up closing out the other team in two sets. We're happy with the way our guys kept their heads on a swivel, which is what you have to do when you find yourself in middle of a vicious fight.
The Green Wave takes on #51 UCF on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET/3 CT in Orlando.
