
Outdoor Track & Field Has Four Earn Places to NCAA East Preliminaries

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University track & field program had four team members selected to next week's NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminaries First Round, the NCAA announced this afternoon.
Each individual event in the two regions (East & West) takes the top-48 qualifiers. Tulane competes in the East Region. The First Round this season is being held on the campus of the University of North Florida at Hodges Stadium from May 24-27.
The four Tulane members that will participate in the NCAA East First Round are Kara Steele (triple jump). Maren Butler (shot put), Mackenzie Callahan (3,000m steeplechase) and Bradley Makuvire (5,000m and the 10,000m).
Steele is ranked No. 42 in the East Region in the triple jump with her 12.72m leap achieved at the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Track and Field Championships last weekend.
Butler is placed No. 35 in the East Region in the shot put from her 15.65m throw achieved at the AAC Track and Field Championships last weekend. Her throw also ranks her second all-time at Tulane in the event.
Callahan comes in ranked No. 37 in the East Region from her 10:24.50 run achieved at the Drake Relays on April 26. Her time is the best-ever at Tulane in the event.
Makuvire comes in ranked No. 15 in the East Region in the 10,000m from his 28:50.61 run achieved at the Mt SAC Relays on April 13. He is also No. 45 in the East Region in the 5,000m with his 13:57.67 run achieved at the Raleigh Relays on March 23. His time in both events is a school record.
Getting an automatic berth to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships from June 7-10 in Austin, Texas in the Heptathlon is Kristen O'Handley. O'Handley currently ranks No. 10 nationally in the event with her 5,802 points achieved at the Virginia Challenge on April 20. Her point total is the best in school history in the event. She was an NCAA Indoor All-American in the Pentathlon earlier in the spring with 4,277 points. The point total is also the best-ever in the school record book.
Next, the Tulane outdoor track & field team sends the four-person delegation to Jacksonville, Fla. for the NCAA East Region. Those that qualify from the East Region will join O'Handley at the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas from June 7-10.
