
Beach Volleyball Has Three Named to CSC Academic All-District Team

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Three members of the Tulane University beach volleyball program were selected to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Women's At-Large Team, the organization announced Tuesday.
Seniors Ashton Mares and Samantha Mehlman along with sophomore Emily Heintzelman earned the honor following a successful season on the sand and in the classroom. Mehlman and Heintzelman were also named to the Conference USA Beach Volleyball All-Academic Team this season.

On the sand, the trio helped the Green Wave finish with a 24-10 record in the 2023 campaign with three wins over ranked opponents. The 24 victories matched a program record for wins in a season set in the 2022 and 2017 seasons.

Heintzelman and Mehlman played primarily played together during the 2023 season tallying a 19-9 record together across flights one, two, and three. The duo also clinched two of the Wave's wins over ranked opponents securing the matches against No. 12 Stetson and No. 19 South Carolina at the Carolina Challenge in March.

Mares was named an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top Flight Award winner alongside Abby Jackson after the pair finished with 28-5 record for the season.

Earlier this month Mares and Mehlman both graduated from Tulane University. Mares earned her degree in design through the school of architecture while Mehlman earned her degree in environmental studies and political ecomomy.
In order to be a member of the CSC's Academic All-District Team, a student-athlete needs to have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or above, be a sophomore or higher in academic class plus are required to have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions this season.
The College Sports Communicators, formerly the College Sports Information Director of America, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes at-large honorees in four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
The trio now advances to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First, second and third-team Academic All-America honorees are set to be announced on June 22.
