Jan 17, 2024 | Men's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tulane University men's basketball (11-6, 2-3) dropped a physical road battle to UAB (11-6, 3-1) 83-69 on Wednesday night. The Green Wave lost the fight around the rim as the team was outrebounded 49-29 and surrendered 48 points in the paint.
All five starters managed to finish with double figures in scoring for the Wave led by Kevin Cross with 14 points including 10 in the second half. Cross also added seven rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals.
Collin Holloway and Sion James each tallied 13 points on the night. Holloway scored 10 of his 13 in the first half while James recorded eight of his total after the break.
Rounding out the double-digit scorers for Tulane were Jaylen Forbes and Tre' Williams with 12 points each. Forbes also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
UAB had four players finish in double figures led by Alejandro Vasquez with a season-high and a game-high 28 points.
The Blazers jumped in front in the opening two minutes of the contest before the Green Wave was settled into the action. Tulane responded with a 20-5 run to claim a 22-12 advantage, the Wave's largest lead of the night, with 11:02 on the clock. The script flipped back in favor of UAB to close the half as the Green Wave eventually faced a 39-33 deficit at the half.
Tulane and UAB went back-and-forth over the first few minutes of the second half with Tulane pulling within two points with 15:38 remaining. However, that would be as close as the Wave would get the rest of the night as the Blazers maintained the advantage before ultimately expanding the lead down the stretch. The Green Wave was unable to make a final push in the closing minutes falling 83-69 in the end.
Up next, Tulane will return home to Uptown to host No. 10 Memphis on Sunday, January 21. Tipoff between the Green Wave and the Tigers is set for 12 p.m. on ESPN2.
