
Swimming & Diving’s Gwen Shahboz Named AAC Swimmer of the Week

IRVING, TX – The Tulane swimming & diving program saw Gwen Shahboz earn American Athletic Conference (AAC) Swimmer of the Week honors on Tuesday afternoon.
Shahboz, a sophomore from Gainesville, Florida, contributed the most points for the Green Wave over the weekend in dual meets against Rice, Houston and LSU. She swam four lifetime bests and two season bests as well as accumulating three NIC bonus cuts and a US Open cut.
In a heavy individual line up against Rice, she came away with wins in the 200 breast and 200 IM, while cruising to a 3rd place in the 200 back. Her time of 2:04.09 in the 200 IM is the fastest in the AAC by almost a second over teammate Andrea Zeebe. The 200 back in 2:04.01 is currently the fourth fastest in the AAC.
The next day Shahboz, against LSU/UH, helped lead the 200 medley relay with a split of 29.74 on the breast leg to a seventh fastest 200 medley relay in school history with Andrea Zeebe, Catherine Russo and Maya Wilson. Next up she set a lifetime best in the 100 breast with a 1:03.42. She beat her personal record from 2022 and the time places her second in the AAC this season. Shahboz continued time drops with a personal best in the 200 breast (2:13.84) to win the event against Houston with the fastest time in the AAC this year and also the 45th fastest in D1 swimming. She qualified for the US Open and the time is the third fastest time in school history. The sophomore finished off her competition weekend with another win over Houston in the 400 IM (4:19.03). The time is the fifth fastest in school history and the best in the AAC by over 5.5 seconds from someone who is not on Tulane's squad.
She is the third Tulane swimmer to be honored as the AAC's Swimmer of the Week this season following Catherine Russo (Oct. 1) and Andrea Zeebe (Oct. 22). Overall, Shahboz is the sixth Tulane swimmer to be named the AAC's Swimmer of the Week (Andrea Zeebe – Oct. 22, 2024; Catherine Russo – Oct. 1, 2024; Victoria Raymond – Oct. 10, 2023; Kate McDonald – Dec. 15, 2020 and Feb. 12, 2019 and Paris Zhang – Jan. 20, 2018). Her being named makes her the 13th different individual that has been named a conference swimmer of the week in the program's history along with Andrea Zeebe (2024 – AAC), Catherine Russo (2024 – AAC), Victoria Raymond (2023 - AAC), Kate McDonald (2020 & 2019 - AAC), Paris Zhang (2018 - AAC), Elizabeth Cook (2015 – CUSA), Mia Schachter (2014 – CUSA), Kayla Alf-Huynh (2011 x 2 – CUSA), Samantha Berdine (2005 – CUSA), Linda McEachrane (2004 – CUSA), Sarah Dicharry (2004 – CUSA) and Leslie Christian (2004 – CUSA).

Following a successful first few weeks of the season, including a strong weekend in Houston, the Tulane swim & diving team are ranked No. 25 nationally by SwimCloud this week.
The program amassed 759.24 points overall in the poll and are also the top ranked Division I Mid-Major program in the country and are currently rank No. 1 in the American Athletic Conference (AAC).
In the team's last meet against the University of Houston and LSU on Nov. 2, Tulane totaled 35 season bests, 13 NIC bonus cuts, 14 top-10 school marks, a school record and nine top-three finishes at the meet.
The meet was highlighted for the Green Wave by Catherine Russo setting the school record in the 50 free with a time of 22.73. The mark also is an NIC bonus cut, a US Open Water qualifier and is the top mark in the event in the AAC this season.
Maya Wilson swam a 49.53 in the 100 free to place second overall in the event and also puts her second in the school history. The mark also was an NIC bonus cut, a US Open Water qualifier and is No. 2 in the AAC. Wilson also placed second in the 200 free with a 1:47.67. That time ranks her fourth in school history and is No. 1 in the AAC plus is an NIC bonus cut.

Rafaela Sumida earned third in the 1000 free with a 10:04.05. The mark was an NIC bonus cut, No. 4 in school history and ranks her No. 1 in the AAC this season. Sumida also finished third in the 500 free with a 4:51.61. The time is an NIC bonus cut, No. 8 in school history and No. 1 in the AAC this season.
Andrea Zeebe earned third in the 400 IM with a 4:19.38. The mark was an NIC bonus cut and ranks her No. 2 in the AAC this season.
The 400 free relay team of Lise Coetzee, Russo, Olcaytu Hatipoglu and Wilson took third in their event with a 3:23.31. The time ranks the group No. 6 in school history and No. 1 in the AAC while also being an NIC bonus cut.
Next, Tulane makes the trip to Cleveland for the Magnus Cup from Nov. 21 – 23 in Ohio.
