
Indoor Track & Field Wraps Up Regular Season at LSU Twilight On Friday

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane indoor track & field program heads to Baton Rouge to participate in the LSU Twilight Meet this Friday. The meet takes place at the Carl Maddox Field House.
The other schools that are competing are Dillard, Hinds CC, Houston, McNeese State, Meridian CC, New Orleans, Nicholls, SAGU, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas A&M Commerce, Texas Lutheran and Xavier of Louisiana.
Tulane will send Shane Auci (800m), Chase Cartwright (3000m), Sam Cohen (mile and 4x400m relay), Zander Dunbar (800m, 4x400m relay), Lee Harris (60m, 200m, 4x400m relay), Charles Henne (800m and 4x400m relay), Dekel Regev (60m, long jump, shot put, 4x400m relay), Francisco Roman III (200m, 60m hurdles), shot put, 4x400m relay), Jalen St. Fort (800m, 4x400m relay), Albert Tawil-Brown (3000m), Tolu Ajayi (60m, 200m), Norah Bice (shot put), Bella Carroll (60m, 200m), Sofia Caruso (shot put), Alyssa Dismuke (shot put), Alyssa Dismuke (shot put), Brenda Ellis (3000m), Bella Gonzalez (shot put), Abigail Heck (800m), Brianna Kirsch (800m), Sophia McNerney (800m, mile), Reese Ragland (800m), Gemma Rebollo (3000m), Karlijn Schouten (pole vault), Alex Sharp (3000m), Emma Simons (shot put), Amanda Soldan (mile) and Shamiso Zihumo (triple jump).
The meet starts on Friday at 10 a.m. with the weight throw. The running events begin with the mile at 1 p.m.
Last time out, Janae Dean set the school 800m record at the Music City Challenge in Nashville, Tenn. The meet featured two school records and 19 personal bests plus an event win.
Dean ran a 2:07.34 in the 800m to place eighth overall in the event. Her time broke Hanne Lyngstad's record 2:08.43 from 1999.
Also setting a school record for the Green Wave was Paula Vaquera in the seeded 3000m with a 9:31.88. Her time, which placed her 10th in the event, was nearly three seconds faster than Lynstad's mark of 9:34.38 also set in 1999.
Danna Diaz set a personal record and ran the school's third-best mile time. She ran a 4:44.42 in the mile. Her time is an improvement of 26 seconds from when she first arrived on campus in the fall. Her time was just ahead of Theresa Maru's 4:45.34 from the 2000 season.
Laura Fodor won the long jump open with her personal-best leap of 5.72m/18'9.25". Sofie Groeninger earned fifth in the event with a personal-best jump of 5.53m/18'1.75".
Norah Bice had a pair of personal bests in the shot put open as she first threw an 11.81m38'9.50" and then topped that mark later in the week with a 12.27m/39'9.25". She placed fifth overall in the event. Bella Gonzalez also placed in the top-10 as she earned seventh with an 11.94m/39'2.25".
Fodor was the team's top finisher in the high jump open as she earned 11th with a 1.56m/5'1.25".
Abigail Heck earned 11th with a personal record of 1:35.41.
Illia Kunin was the men's top finisher as the men's mile as he placed 18th in the mile with a 4:06.06.
Paul James Pam earned ninth and had a personal record in the 5000m with a 14:16.01. His time also broke the Nigeria 5K record.
Elena Liano-Rengel also etched her name in the school record book in finishing third in the unseeded 800m. Her time of 2:09.27 is currently the fifth fastest-ever at Tulane in the event. Also setting personal record in the event for Tulane were Anna Schadel with a 2:13.88 and Danna Diaz with a 2:14.40.
Kate Sander placed fifth in the pole vault with her 3.67m/12'0.50".
Karlijn Schouten earned fifth in the invited pole vault with a 3.96m/12'11.75".
Kaia Todd set a personal record with an 8.20 in the 60m. She also placed fifth in the triple jump with an 11.88m/38'11.75".
In the men's unseeded 800m, Jalen St. Fort set a personal record with 1:53.81. Zander Dunbar ran a 1:54.90. Sam Cohen set a personal record with his 1:55.52.
Ryan Adkins with the team's top finisher in 15th place in the unseeded 3000m with an 8:23.30.
Robyn Larkan placed seventh in the qualifying round of the women's 60m hurdles with her 8.72 and earned 15th overall in the event with her 8.78 in the first round
Abigail Heck set a personal record in the unseeded 400m with her 58.45. Alyssa Taylor also set a personal record with a 59.06 in the same event.
The women's 4x400m relay team of Laura Fodor, Alyssa Taylor, Liano-Rengel and Dean finished 11th with a 3:50.57.
The men's 4x400m relay team of Dunbar, Henne, St. Fort and Illia Kunin placed 13th with a 3:20.38
Jack Jennings took 19th in the seeded 3000m with his 8:15.42.
Tulane currently has 15 that rank in the top-10 in the AAC in an event. Janae Dean is second in the women's 800m (2:07.34). Elena Liano-Rengel is fourth in the women's 800m (2:09.27). Danna Diaz is second in the women's mile (4:44.42) and fifth in the 3000m (9:34.45). Illia Kunin is second in the men's 3000m (7:55.54) and is second in the mile (4:06.06). Paula Vaquera is third in the 3000m (9:31.88). Jack Jennings is second in the 5000m (13:56.71). Paul James Pam is fourth in the 5000m (14:16.01). Ryan Adkins is sixth in the 5000m (14:43.73). The men's 4x400m relay team of Zander Dunbar, Charles Henne, Jalen St. Fort and Kunin is ninth in their event (3:20.38). The women's 4x400m relay team of Laura Fodor, Alyssa Taylor, Liano-Rengel and Dean are ninth in their event (3:50.57). Karlijn Schouten is fourth in the women's pole vault (4.00m). Fodor is third in the pentathlon (3732 points) and Sofie Groeninger is seventh in the pentathlon (3560 points).
The program also has two event squads that rank among the top 37 nationally. The pentathlon group of Laura Fodor, Sofie Groeninger, Patricija Ozolina and Kaia Todd are 10th nationally with 13,954 points and an average of 3,488 points. The 800m group of Janae Dean, Elena Liano-Rengel, Anna Schadel and Danna Diaz is 37th nationally with an 8:44.89 total and an average of 2:11.22 per person.
During indoor season for the 2022-23 school year, the Tulane women had a total of four All-Conference AAC members in Kara Steele (1st – triple jump), Mackenzie Callahan (2nd - mile), Victoria Robinson (2nd – 800m) and Kristen O'Handley (1st – Pentathlon). Tulane placed fourth overall during indoor season, with 65.5 points, which was the highest-ever finish for the program in the AAC. O'Handley ended the year by achieving All-American status in the Pentathlon. During outdoor season, the Tulane women placed sixth overall with 63 points. The finish was Tulane's best since 2016. The Tulane men finished eighth during outdoor season with 26 points. The program totaled nine All-Conference selections during outdoor season in Janae Dean (1st – women's 800m), Victoria Robinson (3rd – women's 800m), Kara Steele (3rd – women's triple jump), Mackenzie Callahan (3rd - women's 1500m), Aaron Gilliam (3rd – men's 1500m), Bradley Makuvire (3rd – men's 5,000m), Mackenzie Callahan (2nd – women's 3000m steeplechase), Maren Butler (3rd – women's shot put), Margot Temines (3rd – women's heptathlon). Kristen O'Handley ended the outdoor season by achieving All-American status in the Heptathlon.
Next, the program competes in the AAC Indoor Track & Field Championship from Feb. 23-24 in Birmingham, Alabama at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
