NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane outdoor track & field program competes in multiple meets this week. The program will send a group to the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on April 11 in Long Beach, California at Jack Rose Track. The team also has a group ready for action at the Bryan Clay Invitational from April 11-13 in Azusa, California at Cougar Athletic Stadium. The program has a third group competing closer to home at the Strawberry Relays in Hammond, Louisiana on April 12 at the Track and Field Complex.
The group that heads to the Bryan Clay includes Ryan Adkins (5,000m, 10,000m), Alan Deogracias III (1,500m, 5,000m), Paula Vaquera (5,000m), Lily Bell (5,000m), Albert Tawil-Brown (5,000m), Paul James Pam (5,000m), Reese Ragland (1,500m), Danna Diaz (1,500m), Illia Kunin (1,500m), Zander Dunbar (4x400m relay, 800m), Jalen St. Fort (4x400m relay, 800m), Sam Cohen (4x400m relay, 800m), Charles Henne (800m), Roman Schrader (4x400m relay, 800m), Elena Liano-Rengel (800m) and Anna Schadel (800m, 1500m)
At the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate the competition group is Kate Sander (pole vault), Kara Schiek (javelin), Alex Sharp (5000m), Macy Turcotte (5000m), Lili Grant (5000m) and Cosette Fleury (pole vault)
At the Strawberry Relays the program is expected to send Adam Aldahir (1500m), Chase Cartwright (1500m), Juan Giron (1500m), Lee Harris (400m), Parker Orlowsky (800m, 1500m), Dekel Regev (high jump, long jump), Francisco Roman III (100m, 110m high hurdles, shot put), Mason Wong (1500m), Tolu Ajayi (200m), Sofia Caruso (discus), Alyssa Dismuke (discus), Brenda Ellis (1500m), Payton Musso (javelin), Emma Simons (discus), Amanda Soldan (1500m) and Sofie Groeninger (1500m).
Last time out the program competed in a pair of meets as the program had part of the squad at the Bobcat Invitational and Multi in San Marcos, Texas and also at the Raleigh Relays from March 28-30 in North Carolina. The team ended up setting a pair of school records and putting up eight top-10 school marks between the two competitions.
Jack Jennings and Illia Kunin both set a school record to lead the program. Jennings set a new school mark in the men's 10,000m with his run of 28:28.72 in finishing third at the Raleigh Relays. The run was a personal best and broke Bradley Makuvire's mark of 28:50.61 set last season. Earlier in the meet, Illia Kunin also set a new school mark as he ran a 13:46.94 in the men's 5,000m. His run was a personal best and broke the previous mark set by Makuvire of 13:57.61. Also recording a mark that reached the school's top-10 in the 5,000m was Ryan Adkins as his 14:31.81 places him ninth all-time. Danna Diaz was the team's top finisher in the women's 5,000m as she ran a 16:34.18 at the Raleigh Relays. Her run ranks her second all-time at Tulane in the event behind only Hanne Lyngstad's 16:30.47 from the 1998 season. Diaz's time was her personal best by over a minute and also set a new Columbia U23 record. Additionally, Paula Vaquera joined the top-five in the school record books in the 5,000m with her run of 17:01.67. The time currently ranks her third all-time at the school. Also joining the school record books for the Tulane women in the 5,000m was Lily Bell. Bell with her 17:19.29. The mark places her sixth all-time. Elena Liano-Rengel was the highest finisher for Tulane in the women's 800m in 49th place with a 2:10.33 in North Carolina. The mark ranked her 10th all-time in the Tulane record books as it topped Angela Milner's 2:10.43 from 2000. Anna Schadel ran a 2:14.55 for 117th place while Reese Ragland totaled 2:18.08 to earn 160th.
In the final standings of the heptathlon at the Bobcat Invitational, Laura Fodor placed fifth with a personal record 5092 points while Kaia Todd took 12th with 4706 points. Fodor's points are the fourth most in school history. Her previous high point total of 4858. Sofie Groeninger finished third in the javelin with her throw of 36.12m/118'06".
For her outstanding individual efforts, Fodor was named the AAC Field Athlete of the Week on April 2. She is the only the second Tulane female student-athlete to be honored by the league with a weekly award since 2019 as Kristen O'Handley took home the same honor last season (2023) and Rebekah Markel was named the Field Athlete of the Week in 2019. Fodor is only the eighth Tulane woman to be recognized by the league with a weekly award since 2014 joining Kristen O'Handley (1 – 2023 - Field), Rebekah Markel (1 – 2019 - Field), Brigid Selfors (1 – 2018 - Track), Jessica Duckett (1 – 2017 – Track), Alyssa Applebee (1 – 2017 – Field), Lilla McMillan (4 – 2016 {2}, 2015 {1}, 2014 {1} – Track) and Emily-Kathryn Hoey (1- 2015 – Track). Additionally, Fodor is only the fourth Tulane woman to ever earn Field Athlete of the Week honors from the conference.
During 2022-23 outdoor season, the Tulane women placed sixth overall with 63 points at the AAC Championships. The finish was Tulane's best since 2016. The Tulane men finished eighth during outdoor season with 26 points. The program totaled nine All-Conference selections during outdoor season in Janae Dean (1st – women's 800m), Victoria Robinson (3rd – women's 800m), Kara Steele (3rd – women's triple jump), Mackenzie Callahan (3rd - women's 1500m), Aaron Gilliam (3rd – men's 1500m), Bradley Makuvire (3rd – men's 5,000m), Mackenzie Callahan (2nd – women's 3000m steeplechase), Maren Butler (3rd – women's shot put), Margot Temines (3rd – women's heptathlon). Kristen O'Handley ended the outdoor season by achieving All-American status in the Heptathlon.
Next, the program will again compete in a pair of competitions. The program participates in the Wake Forest Invitational on April 19 in North Carolina and the Jim Green Invitational in Kentucky from April 19-20.
