Bowling Off to the USBC Intercollegiate Team/Singles Championships This Week

New Orleans – The Tulane University bowling team will be back in action this week as the program attempts to win both a single and a team national championship at the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Intercollegiate Singles and Team Championships. The championships are being held from April 16-20 in Jeffersontown, Kentucky at Kingpin Lanes. The Green Wave are one of only 16 teams nationally that qualified from the four regionals (Addison, Detroit, Fort Worth and Smyrna).
The format for the Intercollegiate Singles Championships is a six-game qualifying round followed by three game bracket play total pinfall. The action begins with the six-game qualifying block to determine seeding for the single-elimination bracket. The top eight qualifiers in the women's division will receive first-round byes with the first three rounds of match play featuring a three-game total pinfall format to determine which player advances. The final four in each division after three rounds will advance to the semifinals and the finals with one-game matches determining the 2024 singles champion.
The format for the Intercollegiate Team Championships is 24 baker game qualifying followed by best-of-seven Baker bracket play. Qualifying will consist of 24 Baker games to determine seeding for the double-elimination match-play bracket. All matches leading up to the title match will be contested in a best-of-seven Baker format.
The complete list of teams that are competing for a national team title are Duquesne, Jacksonville State, Maryville, Mount Mercy, Louisiana Tech, Maryland Eastern Shore, North Carolina A&T, Oklahoma Christian, Pikeville, Sacred Heart, Saint Xavier, Savannah College of Art and Design, St. Francis – Illinois, Tulane, Webber International and Wichita State.
Morgan Gitlitz is one of 24 individual bowlers that qualified for nationals in the singles portion of the championships along with Maya Avilez (North Carolina A&T), Brystal Beyer (Stephen F. Austin), Hailey Bozych (Lindenwood), Elena Carr (Mount Mercy), Kristina Catoe (Pikeville), Molly Chiesa (Sacred Heart), Keyla Covarrubias (Jacksonville State), Sara Duque (Wichita State), Crystal Elliott (Jacksonville State), Kaylee Hitt (Vanderbilt), Melanie Katen (North Carolina A&T), Natalie Kent (Vanderbilt), Juliana Kerrigan (Stephen F. Austin), Megan Kolberg (Mount Mercy), Erica Lohr (Lewis), Emily Newbauer (Vitterbo), Chloe Newberry (North Carolina A&T), Chloe Siezega (Judson), Kayla Smith (Jacksonville State), Samantha Smith (Lindenwood), Kylee Trexler (Louisiana Tech), Mackenzie Ullian (Mount Mercy) and Jaqueline Witura (Webber International).
Tulane earned the right to play for a USBC Intercollegiate Team (ITC) National Title as a team by placing tied for third overall at the ITC Sectional Qualifier from March 8-10 in Fort Worth, Texas. The program totaled 12,450 pins over the course of two days and 64 games of the event to tie with Oklahoma Christian for third among the 16 teams competing at the Fort Worth Sectional. The event will also feature the Intercollegiate Singles Championships (ISC) from April 16-20. Gitlitz qualified for the singles championships by placing fourth among the individuals at the sections on March 8 with 1312 pins.
Gitlitz will compete first as she begins on Tuesday, April 16, at 8 a.m. with the six games in the qualifying round. The first round of match play begins at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The second round of round two for match play begins at 2 p.m. later that afternoon. The third round of match play begins at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday. On Thursday, the team part of the tournament begins at 7 a.m. with the qualify round which consists of 24 baker games. The first round of match play for the team kicks off at 3 p.m. on Thursday. The second round of match play starts at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Friday will consist of rounds 3-7 of match play starting at 6:45 a.m. for the team. The team championships finals for the women starts on Friday at 10 a.m. in Session I. The Second session on Friday starts with the women's ISC Semifinals at 2:15 p.m. The format will be one game played to total pins as will the finals which follows in Session 2.

Last time out at the CUSA Championships from March 21-22, Tulane advanced out of the play-in match with a 2-1 win over Valparaiso on the opening day on Thursday, but fell 2-0 to No. 1 seed and eventual NCAA National Championship Jacksonville State and 2-1 to Louisiana Tech on Friday in the double elimination tournament to tie for seventh overall.
On the season, Kristen Derr has the team's most pins at 10,337 and average at 202.6. She also has the highest game on the squad as she rolled a 280 at the Stormin' Blue and White Classic.
Tulane enters the tournament ranked No. 14 in latest released RPI by the NCAA with an overall mark of 62-41 (.602)
