Apr 20, 2024 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Tulane University men's tennis (9-15) had its run at the American Athletic Conference Championship come to an end as it was eliminated by the six seed Charlotte (18-7) in the semifinals Saturday. The Green Wave won the doubles point in all three matches at the AAC Championship but was unable to hold off the 49ers on Saturday dropping a chance for back-to-back title match appearances.
For the third straight match at Tulsa's Case Tennis Center Tulane gained the early advantage by securing the doubles point. After Charlotte got the first win in doubles action the Wave responded on courts two and three. Luka Petrovic and Sam Scherer picked up their third consecutive win in the tournament before Billy Suarez and Benji Jacobson clinched the doubles point for Tulane with their second doubles win of the tournament.
The Green Wave extended its lead quickly as singles play began. Fynn Kuenkler notched his third-straight victory to win the point at court five in two sets and put the Wave up 2-0 on the 49ers.
Charlotte answered the early push by Tulane by winning at courts three and two in two sets to even the overall score at 2-2. The Wave faced its first deficit of the day, 3-2, after dropping the point at court six in two sets.
After winning the first set on courts one and four for Tulane, Suarez and Luc Hoeijmans had to battle in a third set on each of their courts with the match on the line. Unfortunately, Charlotte managed to find a third set victory on court four and the Green Wave would ultimately lose 4-2.
