
Track & Field Sends a Pair to the NCAA East First Round this Week

Lexington, Kentucky – The Tulane outdoor track & field program will be represented by Jack Jennings and Illia Kunin at this year's NCAA East First Round in Lexington, Kentucky on the campus of the University of Kentucky from May 22-25.
Jennings qualified and will compete in the 10,000m on Wednesday, May 22, at 8:10 p.m. Kunin starts his competition on Friday, May 24, at 7:10 p.m. in the 5,000m. The top 12 times in each of the two regions (East First Round and West First Round) advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships held in Eugene, Oregon from June 5-8.
Jennings enters the meet ranked first in the AAC, eighth in the East Region and 35th in the NCAA in the 10,000m with his school record time of 28:28.72 which he achieved at the Raleigh Relays. Kunin is third in the AAC and ranked 35th in the East Region in the 5,000m with his school record time of 13:46.94 also achieved at the Raleigh Relays.
Last time out the team competed at the AAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships from May 10-12 in San Antonio, Texas. The men's team placed 10th overall with 27 points while the women's team took 11th with 26 points. The program totaled five all-conference performances over the three days in Jennings (2nd – men's 5,000m & 3rd in the men's 10,000m), Danna Diaz (3rd in the women's 1500m), Elena Liano-Rengel (3rd in the women's 800m) and Zander Dunbar (1st in the men's 800m). The program also had five top-10 schools mark at the meet in Paula Vaquera (No. 7 in the women's 10,000m – 37:59.93), Lily Bell (No. 9 in the women's 10,000m – 38:15.13), Sofie Groeninger (No. 10 in the women's shot put – 13.28m/43'07.00"), Kaia Todd (No. 9 in the women's triple jump – 12.31m/40'04.75"), Elena Liano-Rengel (No. 5 in the 800m – 2:07.34)
The women's program earned eighth during the 2023-24 indoor campaign with the team totaling three all-conference performances. Karlijn Schouten took third in the pole vault, Paula Vaquera placed second in the 3000m while Janae Dean earned third in the 800m.
Following the action this week the program, depending on the results at the NCAA East First Round, will compete in the NCAA Outdoor Championships from June 5-8 in Euguene, Oregon.
