Bowling’s Sofiia Druchyna Earns International Tulanian Academic Excellence Award

New Orleans – Tulane bowling's Sofiia Druchyna was awarded last week with an Academic Excellence Award from the Newcomb-Tulane College Center for Global Education, the school announced during the graduation festivities.
Druchyna, a native of Odessa, Ukraine, earned the award titled the "International Tulanian Academic Excellence Award".
The award is given out to "honor and applaud the outstanding accomplishments of the international community members at Tulane. Through their dedication, resilience, and academic excellence, they have exemplified the spirit of global citizenship and contributed immensely to the vibrant community at Tulane."
During her time at Tulane, besides being a student-athlete as a member of the bowling team, Druchyna was a double major in computer science and information technology with a concentration in cybersecurity. She graduated Tulane a year early with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). Following last week's graduation. Druchyna is attending Princeton's Master of Computer Science program on a full scholarship. Also during her time at Tulane, she was the back-to-back winner of the Tulane Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, a member of the Southland Bowling League's Academic Honor Roll in 2022 and 2023, named to the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) All-Academic Team in 2023 and a National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association Scholar Athlete in 2023-24. She also worked as a teaching assistant, a research assistant, and a course instructor for several classes at Tulane, not only because of her success in the classroom, but also because of her ability to mentor and help other students be successful. She also received the CELT Undergraduate Research Award and the Computer Science Teaching Assistantship Award in 2023. She founded sustained academic success and excellence at Tulane in her career despite a rigorous athletic schedule, injuries that impact her final year at the school, being deeply involved on Tulane's campus in various roles, and dealing with issues related to having family and friends in Ukraine during wartime.
Also last week, Druchyna was one of eight Tulane student-athletes named to the CUSA Commissioner's Honor Roll along with Yarelis Alvarez, Kristen Derr, Emma Fetterman, Morgan Gitlitz, Linnea Holcomb, Katharine Mente and Cassidy Williams for having a 3.0 and above cumulative GPA.
Additionally, Druchyna was one of two Tulane bowlers this season to be honored with a CUSA Commissioner Academic Medal along with Emma Fetterman for having a 3.75 or higher cumulative GPA for the 2023-24 school year.
On the season, Kristen Derr had the team's most pins at 10,337 and average at 202.6. She also had the highest game on the squad as she rolled a 280 at the Stormin' Blue and White Classic.
Tulane finished the season with an overall record of 63-43 (59.4 winning percentage) and ranked No. 15 in the final National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) poll. The team qualified and competed in the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Intercollegiate Team Championships from April 18-19 in Kentucky. The program also saw Morgan Gitlitz competed in the Intercollegiate Singles Championships this season.
This year's Tulane roster featured six returners in Gitlitz, Alvarez, Druchyna, Mente, Mia Stolakis and Williams plus four newcomers in Juanelyz Solla, Fetterman, Derr and Holcomb. Stolakis became the first Tulane bowler to ever qualify for the Junior USA Team with her performance at US Team Trials from Jan. 2-7. Derr became the seventh Tulane player to ever earn NTCA All-American accolades with her honorable mention selection this season.
