
Swimming & Diving Sees Three Earn Weekly AAC Honors

IRVING, TX – The Tulane swimming & diving program had three student-athletes in Maya Wilson (Swimmer of the Week), Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropoulou (Freshman Swimmer of the Week) and Kelsey Weddington (Freshman Diver of the Week) honored with weekly awards by the American Athletic Conference (AAC) on Tuesday afternoon
Wilson, a graduate student from Burbank, California, earned a pair of individual victories and led the relay teams to two wins as well against Little Rock on Jan. 25. She won the 100 free (48.50) and the 200 free (1:45.56) in school record and lifetime best marks. The school records broken were her own that she had set in November. Wilson also helped lead the 200 medley relay (with a personal best split in the 50 free of 21.83) and the 400 free relay (47.89) to wins over the Trojans.
She is currently ranked No. 1 in the conference in the 100 free and the 200 free and helps pace the No. 1 ranked 400 free relay and No. 2 ranked 200 medley relay teams. Her 100 free mark is also the 43rd fastest in Division I this season.
This is the second time this season that Wilson has been named the AAC's Swimmer of the Week (Jan. 7 & Jan. 28). It is the fifth time this season that a Tulane swimmer has been named the AAC's Swimmer of the Week. Overall, Wilson being named this week is the eighth different time that a Tulane swimmer has been named the AAC's Swimmer of the Week (Maya Wilson – Jan. 7 and Jan. 28, 2024; Gwen Shahboz – Nov. 5, 2024; Andrea Zeebe – Oct. 22, 2024; Catherine Russo – Oct. 1, 2024; Victoria Raymond – Oct. 10, 2023; Kate McDonald – Dec. 15, 2020 and Feb. 12, 2019 and Paris Zhang – Jan. 20, 2018). Her being named for the second time makes her the 14th different individual that has been named a conference swimmer of the week in the program's history along Gwen Shahboz (2024 – AAC), Andrea Zeebe (2024 – AAC), Catherine Russo (2024 – AAC), Victoria Raymond (2023 - AAC), Kate McDonald (2020 & 2019 - AAC), Paris Zhang (2018 - AAC), Elizabeth Cook (2015 – CUSA), Mia Schachter (2014 – CUSA), Kayla Alf-Huynh (2011 x 2 – CUSA), Samantha Berdine (2005 – CUSA), Linda McEachrane (2004 – CUSA), Sarah Dicharry (2004 – CUSA) and Leslie Christian (2004 – CUSA).
Petropoulou, a freshman from Thessaloniki, Greece, swam her way to a dual meet win in the 200 fly (2:03.07) and a second place finish in the 200 IM (2:09.45) against Little Rock. Her 200 medley relay team (exhibition) would have second place with her second-best relay split of the season, 25.37, in the 50 fly portion of the race. Her 500 free (exhibition) would have scored third place (5:03.77). This is the second time this season that Petropoulou has been named the Freshman Swimmer of the Week (Oct. 22).
Weddington, a freshman from Conroe, Texas, had college best performances in both the 3-meter and 1-meter diving events against Little Rock. She earned fourth place on 3-meter with a score of 246.53. The mark was a college best performance by her by 3.23 points. On 1-meter, she earned second place with a score of 267.60. This was her college best by 36.97 points. Weddington's score also qualified her for Zones in the 1-meter. In addition to her college best performances, her 1-meter score placed her on the all-time top ten list at Tulane at No. 7. This is the first time ever that a Tulane Diver has been named Freshman Diver of the Week.

The Tulane swimming and diving team won all 16 events, totaled 23 top three individual finishes, 12 personal bests, set two school records and saw a pair qualify for the Zone D Diving Championships in earning a 178-112 victory over Little Rock on Saturday at the Reily Center Natatorium.
Maya Wilson set a pair of school records and personal bests in capturing victories in the 200 free (1:45.46) and the 100 free (48.50).
Anna Behrman was also a multiple event winner as she won the 3-meter dive (265.58) and the 1-meter dive (270.08). Both point totals were personal bests. Her 1-meter points was also a Zone qualifying mark. Teammate Kelsey Weddington also had a Zone qualifying mark (267.60) in earning second in the 1-meter dive.
Andrea Zeebe had victories in the 100 back (54.63), the 200 back (1:59.65) and the 200 IM (2:04.31).
Catherine Russo won the 50 fly (22.78) and the 100 fly (53.56).
Sydney Mullin won the 1000 free (10:13.04).
Paula Gaya Bisquerra won the 100 breast (1:03.48).
Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropolou won the 200 fly (2:03.07).
Gwen Shahboz won the 200 breast (2:15.37).
Lise Coetzee won the 500 free (4:53.78).
The 200 medley relay team of Zeebe, Emma Brady, Russo and Wilson won their event (1:40.16).
The 400 free relay team of Russo, Olcaytu Hatipoglu, Rafaela Sumida and Wilson won their event (3:19.33).
Nest Tulane wraps up the home and regular season in hosting West Florida on Feb. 1 at 1:30 p.m. The 2025 AAC Swimming Championship will be held from Feb. 19-22 in Dallas, Texas at SMU.
