
Football Falls to No. 11 Ole Miss, 45-10

OXFORD, MS - Tulane's football team (3-1) lost on the road to No. 11 Ole Miss (4-0) by a 45-10 score at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday..
Quarterback Jake Retzlaff led the team with his 51 yards on the ground, but was limited to 5-for-17 for 56 yards through the air. Brendan Sullivan went 5-for-11 in relief for 48 yards and the team's touchdown. Arnold Barnes totaled 11 carries for 47 yards. Javin Gordon picked up eight attempts for 35 yards. Jamauri McClure totaled three attempts for 19 yards. Shazz Preston totaled three catches for 35 yards. Bryce Bohanon picked up three catches for 28 yards. Omari Hayes had a catch for 22 yards. Anthony Brown-Stephens caught the team's touchdown pass.
Jack Tchienchou and Kevin Adams III tied for the team lead with six tackles. Dickson Agu totaled five tackles as did Javion White. Sam Howard picked up five tackles and the team's sack. Geordan Guidry had a forced fumble.
Tulane's offense was limited to 282 yards in the game. The team ran for 178 and threw for 104. Ole Miss put up 548 yards in offense in the contest including 241 on the ground.
Ole Miss was led by Trinidad Chambliss. Chambliss ran for 112 yards and also completed 17 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Deuce Alexander hauled in four passes for 94 yards.
Ole Miss started the scoring with an eight-play, 75-yard drive completed on the five yard pass to Dae'Quan Wright from Chambliss to go up 7-0 with 12:27 remaining in the opening period.
After a defensive stop, Ole Miss scored for the second time on the 22-yard field goal from Lucas Carniero to go up 10-0 with 3:13 left in the first quarter.
The Rebels added another three to the lead on the 54-yard field goal from Carniero to put the score at 13-0 with 12:52 remaining in the second quarter.
The Green Wave put its most productive drive up to that point next as the team marched down and got a 34-yard Patrick Durkin field goal to draw to within two scores at 13-3 with 6:40 remaining in the first half. The big play of the drive was a 30-yard rush from Retzlaff.
The offense for Ole Miss kept in gear as the team answered with a one-yard rushing touchdown from Kewan Lacy to put the score at 20-3 with 4:09 remaining in the second quarter.
The Rebels scored their third field goal of the half as Carniero connected from 33 yards out to increase the lead to 23-3 at the break.
After the Tulane offense was turned away twice on fourth down on third quarter drives, Ole Miss scored the team's first points of the second half on the one-yard rush from Lacy to increase their lead to 31-3 with 14:55 remaining in the game after the converted two-point conversion to Harrison Wallace III.
Another Tulane turnover on downs quickly led to an Ole Miss touchdown drive as Logan Diggs ran it in from the two to put the Rebels up 38-3 with 11:45 remaining. The big play on the drive was a 53-yard reception by Wright.
Ole Miss reached the 40-point mark on the touchdown pass to Deuce Alexander to increase the score to 45-3 with 8:17 remaining.
Tulane scored the team's only touchdown of the game as Brown-Stephens hauled in a six-yard pass from Sullivan to get Tulane to within 45-10 with 3:42 remaining in what would be the final margin. The drive consisted of 11 plays, 65 yards.
Next, the football team stays on road and starts conference play against Tulsa at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
NOTES:
- The 35-point loss was the largest defeat for Tulane since falling to Ole Miss by a 61-21 score during the 2021 campaign (9/18/21).
- With the loss, Tulane fell to 28-44* all-time against Ole Miss (after vacated wins) in the first game between the schools since 2023 and the first contest in Oxford, Miss. since 2021…The loss was the program's 14th straight to the Rebels overall.
- The loss dropped Tulane to 16-3 in the last 19 road contests…The 16 road wins since the beginning of the 2022 season is the most in the nation…The team's only other losses also came to ranked opponents in No. 13 Oklahoma (34-19) during the 2024 regular season and No. 25 Army (35-14) in the 2024 American Championship Game.
- The loss dropped Tulane to 166-277-31 all-time against current schools in the SEC…The school has been playing against SEC opponents since a matchup against Alabama and Texas in 1894…The program's most victories against an SEC opponent is 29 against Vanderbilt… Tulane's last win over an SEC opponent was at Mississippi State during the 2006 season by a 32-29 score.
- Since the start of the 2022 season, Tulane is now 35-11 (.760)…The win total is tied for the sixth-most in the country in that period of time (Georgia – 42, Ohio State – 39, Oregon – 38, Michigan – 37, Penn State – 37, Tulane – 35, Texas – 35 and Notre Dame -- 33)
- The Green Wave is 3-1 for the first time since 2023…Overall the team has been 3-1 a total of 27 times in school history
- The loss was the fourth straight to a ranked opponent for Tulane and dropped the program to 22-128-2 all-time against ranked foes.
- Coach Sumrall saw his all-time record fall to 35-10 (.777) with the loss to the Rebels…His .777 career winning percentage ranks him fourth among current FBS coaches only behind Ohio State's Ryan Day (73-10, .879), Oregon's Dan Lanning (38-6, .863) and Georgia's Kirby Smart (108-19, .850).
- With the loss, Coach Sumrall is 3-1 for the first time in his four-year head coaching career as he had started each of his first three seasons going 1-2.
