Tulane Extends Win Streak to Seven with Two Wins at ASICS Classic

MALIBU, Calif. – The Green Wave kept rolling into the Pepperdine Beach Courts with a pair of triumphs Friday to kick off the ASICS Classic, hosted by Pepperdine. After besting the host Waves 3-2, Tulane prevailed 5-0 over Vanguard (Calif.) to move to 13-7 on the campaign while extending its winning streak to seven in a row.

The day opened with a bout between the Wave and the Waves. Pepperdine got off to a hot start, winning the first two duals of the morning. The first to finish was the second flight, where Pepperdine claimed a sweep with both sets going 21-13. The fourth flight went three sets as Avery Burks and Gigi Gallegos claimed the opening frame 21-18. However, the Waves rallied to win 21-15 and 15-7 for a 2-0 lead in the dual. As the second wave of matches picked up, Tulane bounced back. The top flight of Molly Trodd and Skylar Ensign got Tulane on the board with a 21-17, 21-18 sweep. At the fourth flight, Amirah Ali and Tawny Ensign notched a sweep (21-13, 21-15), tying the contest a 2-all. The dual came down to the fifth flight, which went the distance. McKenzie Cutler and Sam O'Connor claimed the first set 23-21 before dropping the second 21-17. In the winner-take-all third frame, the Green Wave tandem won 15-10 to secure the victory for Tulane.
The momentum of the win carried into the dual against Vanguard, which Tulane won in sweep fashion, 5-0, with just one set dropped. Emma Morris and Katie Hansen started things off for the Wave with a sweep at the No. 2 flight with both sets tallying scores of 21-10. Gallegos paired with Giorgia Walther at the fourth flight in this dual, and they won 21-14 and 21-15 for another sweep. The fifth flight of Lauren Mann and Gabbi Kucinski clinched the dual for Tulane in dominant fashion with a sweep (21-7, 21-11). Ali and T. Ensign swept at No. 3 with dominant sets of 21-8 and 21-10. The only set Tulane lost was the first set of the top flight, 21-18. From there, Trodd and S. Ensign closed out the contest 21-6 and 15-8 to secure the 5-0 sweep.

Tulane is back in action with two more duals tomorrow. First, the Wave takes on No. 8 Loyola Marymount at 1:00 p.m. CT, and Tulane closes out its stint out west with a tilt against Concordia University Irvine right after at 3:00 p.m. CT.
