Jack Tchienchou Named to 2026 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Preseason Watch List

DALLAS – Tulane senior defensive back Jack Tchienchou was recently named to the 2026 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Preseason Watch List by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
The trophy is given annually to the National Defensive Player of the Year. The list contains players from 68 different schools in 10 Division I FBS conferences plus independents. By position, the list includes 21 linebackers, 16 safeties, 13 defensive ends, 10 defensive tackles, and eight cornerbacks. Tchienchou is one of two players from the American on the list, one of only three from the state of Louisiana and one of 15 from a non-Power 4 school to be named this year.
Tchienchou played and started all 14 games last season at safety for Tulane. He led the team in tackles (83), while totaling 2.5 stops for loss, a sack, two interceptions, three pass breakups, a fumble recovery, and a forced fumble. Tchienchou was a First Team American All-Conference selection in a vote of the league's coaches last season and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2025 American Conference Championship Game. He also was a First Team Preseason selection to Phil Steele and a First Team Preseason selection by Athlon Sports.
The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce the finalists for the 2026 Bronko Nagurski Trophy on November 19, and the winner will be revealed at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet on Dec. 7 in Charlotte, N.C.
Players may be added or removed from the watch list during the season. As in previous years, the FWAA will announce a Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week each Tuesday during the season.
The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the association's full membership, selects a 26-man All-America Team and eventually the Bronko Nagurski Trophy finalists. Committee members, by individual ballot, select the winner they regard as the best defensive player in college football.
The FWAA has chosen a National Defensive Player of the Year since 1993. In 1995, the FWAA named the award in honor of the legendary two-way player from the University of Minnesota. Nagurski dominated college football, then became a star for professional football's Chicago Bears in the 1930s. Bronislaw "Bronko" Nagurski is a charter member of both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses college football's most prestigious awards. The NCFAA's 25 awards have honored more than 950 recipients since 1935.
Sixteen NCFAA members are unveiling preseason watch lists over a two-week period as the association spearheads a coordinated effort to promote each award's preseason candidates.

About Tulane Football
The Green Wave finished the 2025 season ranked No. 18 in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls. This marked only the second time in four seasons, the third since 1998, and the fourth since 1970 that the program has finished a season nationally ranked.
Tulane won the American Conference Championship, securing its second conference title in four years. With an 11-3 record, it earned its first-ever playoff appearance in school history against Ole Miss. Notably, Tulane became the first team from Louisiana to make the College Football Playoff (CFP) in the 12-team format, qualifying as the fourth-highest ranked conference champion.
The 2025 season featured 11 wins in 14 games, including two victories over Power 4 opponents—the first time since 1988. The win over North Texas (34-21) secured Tulane's second conference title in four years.
The team earned 13 All-Conference selections, including the Special Teams Player of the Year. The team's returning All-Conference players for the 2026 season includes Jack Tchienchou (safety – 1st team), TJ Smith (return specialist – 3rd team), and Jason Arredondo (designated snapper –3rd team).
