Cheruiyot Claims Victory to Lead Strong Wave Performances in Chicago

CHICAGO – The Green Wave cross country programs rolled in the Windy City Friday morning as both the men's and women's teams earned top-eight placements in the 47th Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational held at the Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course. Highlighting the day was Bernard Cheruiyot, who won the men's 8K race in his season debut.
The meet was hosted by Loyola Chicago and featured 17 total teams in each of the women's and men's races, both of which featured strong competition. The Tulane women, ranked second in the South Central Region, placed eighth in the Tom Cooney Women's 6K Championship race with a score of 212. Each of the top-three finishers were top-25 squads as No. 20 Virginia claimed the victory with 71 points. No. 24 Minnesota was the runner-up with 112 points, and No. 12 Northwestern followed with 123 points.
The Tom Cooney Men's 8K Championship race saw No. 24 Tulane finish fifth with 161 points. The Wave, also ranked second in the South Central Region, beat out a pair of top-15 programs as No. 11 Wisconsin (201 points) finished eighth with No. 13 Washington (257 points) placing 11th. The Wave was directly ahead of Middle Tennessee and its 168 points, one of two teams in the field receiving votes. Arizona claimed the team win with 85 points, narrowly besting Michigan, the other program receiving votes, and its 88 points.
Petra Dos Santos was the top finisher for the Wave women, placing 19th behind a time of 19:52.02. This time is now eighth best in the 6K in program history. Blezzin Kimutai followed not far behind in 24th with a mark of 19:59.59, placing her 12th all-time in the program record book. Haley Harper ran a time of 20:15.53 to place 47th, and Allison Hall finished 55th with a time of 20:24.34. Rounding out the scoring for Tulane was Dana Rojas Vazquez, whose time of 20:33.29 was good for 71st.
The stout field featured upwards of 150 runners in total with Arizona's Mercy Chepkemori claiming the victory with a time of 19:02.52. Tulane's top seven was rounded out with Dorcas Naibei in 75th (20:35.57) and Becky Osorio in 103rd (21.01.27).
Bernard Cheruiyot made his season debut in style for the Wave, delivering a time of 22:37.20 en route to the individual crown. His time is now second best in program history in the 8K behind only his own mark of 22:32.4 from last October. The Tulane men have started off the season with an individual victory in both meets thus far as Silas Kiptanui began the campaign as the victor in the Battle for New Orleans. Kiptanui was the second Wave finisher today, posting a time of 23:01.84 to finish seventh and mark a pair of Tulanians in the top 10. Kiptanui's time is sixth best in program history.
Micah Grossman placed 44th with a time of 23:33.34, and Paul James Pam was 54th with a mark of 23:37.35. Tommy Rice rounds out the scoring for the Wave with his time of 23:38.51 in 55th place. Completing the top seven is Gilbert Rono in 56th (23:38.53) and Timothy Kibet in 59th (23:40.69).
The final Wave competitor was Daniel Reza, who ran in the Men's 8K Open race and finished ninth our of 37 runners with a time of 24:36.93.
After a strong showing in Chicago, the Wave returns home to the Pelican State for the Nicholls XC Invitational next weekend. Hosted by the namesake Colonels, Tulane will trek over to Thibodaux, Louisiana, on October 3 for the second of four-straight weeks in action.
